Light Art as a topic can cover so many different kinds of projects and ideas. The course aims to push students to think creatively about using light to create or enhance art. When getting started with the class, I knew that I wanted to incorporate other things I loved within my project, and those things ended up being fashion and ballroom dance. A ballroom dance dress is made to catch the eye of the judges during competition. I thought, “what better way to do this then by adding a little glow.” My project takes much inspiration from current ballroom dress designs and utilizes low tech lighting components to create a light weight and flouncy leotard and skirt set. The leotard emits light through EL wire sewed on in a corset inspired pattern and the skirt has tassel like components that glow through LED lights and optic fibers. Put together, the set gives a very similar end result to many ballroom dance dresses you see at competitions today.
