Project Concepts – Codey Battista

I know that I want to use LED lights in some capacity. I’m not necessarily sure what I am going to do with them but I have a couple ideas. They are rough concepts but I am willing to take any suggestions!

Concept 1: An LED sign with cutouts that let the light shine through. My first thought is decorative. It can be flashing or different colors. The design on the outside can be anything I want it to be (Probably be something sports related)

Artist question #1: What else can I do to make this concept better?

LED sign concept

Concept 2: An LED filled box with different design cutouts on each side or surface. I like how it could be interactive if it is hanging so that every angle would be a different view.

Artist Question #2: What could I use to make this? Specifically, what material?

Artist Question #3: What could make this concept better?

LED Box

I think using some kind of LED strip diffuser would be a good idea. They create a softer light effect that is different from the way the strips normally look. One idea to make the concept better could be to make the base of the sign the shape of a helmet instead of the square.

Concept 2 (the light-filled box) is very interesting because it could be used as a type of lamp or chandelier as all the sides will be emitting light, and you discussed it could be hanging from the ceiling. This more modern take on a chandelier is very interesting to me. To make concept 1 more interesting you can add the logo of a sports team that you make the sign of. For concept 2, to make the box, you could use acrylic or light plastic so it wouldn’t be too heavy if you hung it, and having the LEDs emit a pattern could make it more interesting. If you go with concept 1 do you plan to try to imitate neon lights on your sign with LEDs, or are you going more for a LED look?
