Project Concept Proposal – Amelia Jones

I am fully aware that this first idea might be too much, I my artist question is “what part/parts of this are realistic to make in the timeline?”

My first concept idea is Stained Glass box/room. This would consist of one (or three) wall(s) and three (or one) curtains, with a stained glass piece on the back wall. I want to have a light source outside of the box, illuminating the stained glass “window”, and any outside light (hopefully) completely blocked. The viewer should be able to sit/stand in the small “room” and enjoy the color and projections of the “window”.

My second concept idea builds on a previous unfinished project of mine. My artist questions are “how can I light these shoes without the battery taking up shoe space?” and “Where is a good location to look for possible lights”

This proposal is EL/LED sewed shoes. Over the summer I was planning to embroider a pair of shoes and started my sketching on the shoe, but that is as far as I got. I could change directions on the project and sew EL or LED or Fiber Optics into the shoe to bring my designs to life.

I think the stained glass concept is really cool, but I agree that it might be a little too ambitious. The show concept could be perfect for the scope and timeline of the project though. I like the idea of sewing the LEDs into the shoe.

I find the EL/LED shoes very interesting, especially the idea of sewing these components onto the shoes to make it nearly seamless, as in most light fashions I have seen, the actual light components seem more like they are glued directly onto the clothing. Creating a stained glass out of acrylic instead of glass or sewing lights into the shoes to create a pattern is a feasible project for our timeline. To attach the battery block to the shoe, you could insert it into the sole or 3D print a battery holder and attach that to the shoe. For the shoes, do you want to incorporate haptic feedback or patterns into the lighting on it?

For the shoes, you might also be able to place a battery pack against your ankle in a band of some sort. Not sure how bulky that would be though.

For the stained glass: I think it would be a good idea to create the stained glass piece first and gradually work towards building the room and curtains if there is time.

For the shoe: Placing the battery pack in some kind of waterproof protector away from moisture is probably important. Maybe you could seal the battery pack inside of the outsole and have the connections/chargers in the insole. You may also want to research if the lights can be powered by low voltage batteries to make the shoes as safe as possible.
