I want to do something with projection mapping. I envision making animations, perhaps timed to music or something like that, and is then projected onto a sculpture. I haven’t decided what the animations will be like exactly, but I’ve made a simple example animation. The first is from the perspective of the projector, the second is from the perspective of a viewer. Currently my current idea for a sculpture is a 3D printed low-poly wolf head. I haven’t decided on how big it will be. Obviously the bigger the better, but I think for now, I’ll make it the same size as the build volume for my roommate’s 3D printer. If I can’t get enough resolution from the projector at that size, then I may end up printing it in parts and assembling it so I can get it bigger than the print volume. Limiting it to the build volume will about 6.5″ tall. At the very least, this will let me test that everything can actually work before printing the multipart larger version.
Artist question: What kind of animations or songs do you think would go well with this project?
I think an animation of a wolf running would look pretty cool. You would also be able to find songs that are upbeat and warrior-like that would fit well.
I think animations inspired by nature, such as trees in the background, would be a good fit here. Music that gives off a sense of wilderness or mystery could work good as well.
I really like the geometric shape and stylization of the wolf’s head, it seems like it will be easier to be projected on while still looking very appealing and striking. Some animations that could go well with the model are eyes moving or the mouth of the wolf slightly opening, and adding in haptic feedback like reactions to noise could be an exciting addition. What type of projector do you plan on using that will allow a clear image to be projected onto the model of the wolf’s head?
I think songs like “Fairy Forest” by Derek Fiechter and other songs you find in Spotify playlists like “Forest Music”
