My name is Kevin Doan, currently a mechanical engineering major here at WPI. Born and raised in Worcester, MA.
Ever since elementary school, art was always one of my favorite classes. Up until high school, I would draw in my sketchbook in my free time. Just recently, I’ve been trying to learn more about graphic design.
Outside of art, I like to model things in SolidWorks/Inventor either for my engineering classes or just random things in my free time. Ever since I was young, I always loved to think of new ideas to build, then actually making it, whether it be out of Lego or cardboard boxes. It wasn’t until much later I learned about mechanical engineering and knew that was something I wanted to do.
A hobby of mine is building model kits and painting them. I guess one could say this combines both engineering and art.
Clever – I the intersection between art and engineering that you live in very clever
Familiar – I also just recently got back into art and focused more on digital art. I used to paint models as well, so the small details and careful painting feel nostalgic.
Quirky- I have heard of model painting but it is really cool to see the difference between the original and after you have put your own personal touches to it. I think its really cool to take something that may be consider the final product to a lot of people and then design it to be your own.
Impressive- I think the subjects you choose to work on to require accuracy and a fine touch. I could definitely learn that from you!
Detailed – After you mentioning you took up drafting in high school, I can see the influence on some of your work, and have to say the attention to proportions and the preciseness of some details is quite good. Not to mention the detail work on that Gundam, I’ve never done it myself but it’s quite cool to see people detail models or cosplay to look like the real thing!
Striking – I think it is impressive that you create using so many mediums. I like that you start with a vision and then end with an actual piece of art.
Detailed – As somebody who’s done lower level 3d modeling in inventor, I understand the amount of precision and time it takes to develop these functional objects. You’ve done a phenomenal job designing these models, your attention to detail is very evident in your work including the painting of that model!
