For my presentation I decided to do artist Jim Campbell.
Campbell started as a videographer, but eventually transitioned to digital art, eventually narrowing down his medium to working with LEDs (SFMOMA). His works tend to have a goal of showing mental disabilities, in particular his earlier works, that tried to demonstrate hallucination, or what it may feel like to have a problem involving movement of yourself (SFMOMA).
His later works would start to fall outside of this original thematic goal. One such piece is Scattered Light, a 3D display of LEDs that when viewed from most angles seem to be randomly turning on and off, but when viewed from the front it can be seen as silhouettes of people walking (SFMOMA). This piece would inspire a piece double the scale, Exploded Views, which would be installed in the SFMOMA in 2012 (SFMOMA).
Campbell’s style would eventually get him many more public project opportunities. Such as The Journey, placed in the San Diego international airport in 2012 (“The Journey, 2012). Or Broken Wall, placed on the side of the Bryon Rogers Federal Courthouse in Denver, Colorado in 2005 (Broken Wall, 2005).
