Introduction and Art Portfolio

Hi, my name is Charles West and I am an IMGD major at WPI from Haverhill, Massachusetts.

Art is a very important part of my life right now. Obviously, I am an IMGD major, which in itself has a pretty large art portion and being successful as one is certainly a potent life goal of mine.

Outside of my studies, I spend a significant amount of my time practicing Martial Arts, specifically the Okinawan style of Uechi Ryu. I’ve done it since I was 5, and have since achieved a rank of Yondan, in English being 4th degree black belt. My training along with those I have met through it has played a large role in who I am today.

I typically do enjoy creative arts, I’ve played piano for quite a few years (though admittedly it has been a little bit since I last played) , and also quite enjoy drawing. Though I’ve only really taken proper lessons for the prior.

Possibly inspired by my enjoyment of creation, in high school I took up Drafting and CAD, and through that learned a lot about that respective trade. I enjoyed working with the technology, and in that same vein would eventually come to be majoring in IMGD and also learning various methods of programming. My programming knowledge almost entirely consists of what I have learned here at WPI, right now consisting of an understanding of Java and C++.

Below are various drawings and other art forms I’ve made this past year. They’re not the most recent forms of art I’ve made, but I usually don’t take many pictures.

The final project I made for video production earlier this year. I was really proud with how it came out and it stars one of my Uechi teachers!

Shiny – The way you were able to show the reflected light off of surfaces using only shading is remarkable!

Thought provoking- When watching the video I couldn’t help but think about my own life and motivations. One of the most thought provoking lines for me was “I have done the same motion for 20+ years yet there is so much to learn”. It feels like you would know everything you need to know after that long of a time doing the same repetitive things. However, it shows just how many intricate parts of life and movement there is.

Familiar – I also went to a trade high school and took up drafting. In addition, I took martial arts (Kung Fu) from elementary to middle school. It’s pretty cool seeing someone else experience the same/similar thing.

Familiar – The drawings that you posted remind me of an art class that I took within my time at WPI. Your drawings are impressively detailed and I wish I could make art that looks that realistic.

Familiar – Some of these pieces of art remind me of work I had completed in previous art classes, except they are most definitely better! I also went to a trade school and love seeing how a trade can influence one’s future work!
