I cut and treated a couple slabs of 182 white stoneware and I made a CAD drawing to laser cut and went to the shop and attempted to cut it.<\/p>\n
What Happened:<\/p>\n
Stoneware is heat resistant and the laser cutter struggled to get even half way through. Interestingly the silica content in the clay turned to glass where the laser cutter cut.<\/p>\n
What I am going to try next:<\/p>\n
I am going to try to roll out significantly thinner slabs of porcelain. I am changing the material because porcelain has a number of unique qualities stoneware does not. Porcelain can sustain being rolled out into much thinner slabs and it can also appear almost translucent when fired. if I can cut out the porcelain I will do that but if I cannot I will etch designs into it so that the design appears almost translucent.<\/p>\n

Since I already have a full 25 pounds of porcelain I don’t think I will need anywhere close to that amount, and other than the laser cutter that is all I am going to need.<\/p>\n
