My name is Mitch Tanguay and I am from eastern Connecticut. I am working towards an IMGD BA with a writing concentration. I am interested in pursuing a career in the video game industry. Although my primary focus is writing, I enjoy 2D art, 3D modeling, level design, and audio design. I am looking forward to improving my skills and familiarity with various creation tools in this course, such as Unity, Maya, Zbrush, and Substance Painter. Through this, I aim to become a more proficient and well-rounded artist.
During my time at WPI, I have taken multiple traditional art classes such as Essentials of Art and Figure Drawing. These classes focused primarily on drawing still-life and portraits using graphite, charcoal, and pastel. In addition, I have taken 3D Modeling I and IMGD4700 (Quest Logic and Level Design). Alongside IMGD3500, I am taking IMGD3700 (Concept Art and Creative Illus.). Outside of class, I am using Clip Studio Paint to learn digital 2D illustration. Over the course of IMGD3500, I especially want to improve my 3D Modeling skills and learn how to rig and animate 3D models.
While I have worked on most aspects of game design individually, with the exception of animation, the majority of my actual game-making experience is concentrated in visual novels, as well as various forms of board games. I have built simple visual novels solo in IMGD2400. I have also built more complex visual novels with a group in IMGD3400. In addition, my MQP group is designing a visual novel told from the perspective of a neurodivergent main character.
Above all, my focus and passion is writing. I aim to write characters and scenarios for video games in the future. Besides writing for games, I write short stories and even poetry on occasion. In the future I strive to write fantasy, science fiction, or historical fiction novels. I am a big fan of the RPG genre, including both western and Japanese RPG’s, but I play a large variety of genres including fighting, hack n’ slash, adventure, and visual novels. Narrative and character writing are important aspects of video games for me, and significantly impact my investment in a particular game. Aesthetically, some video game franchises have inspired me are Persona, Final Fantasy, Xenoblade Chronicles, The Witcher, Bioshock, Uncharted, God of War, Nier, Hollow Knight, and Disco Elysium among others. I also draw inspiration from Anime and Manga, as well as western animated films from Disney and Dreamworks. It is difficult to describe where my inspiration for writing comes from. I try to absorb styles and methods from everything I read.

The face on Leonardo is funny to me, I like the amount of detail used in each of your art creations.
Badge: dark
I’m a big fan of that level design showcase, and the vibes are perfect amounts of intriguing and dark.
Badge: Detailed
The level design and character sculpt are both filled with some great details. Your traditional artwork is also very well done, the torso has some great details in the muscles and groves.
Badge: Thought-Provoking
With both the level and most of your physical pieces it really made me think of what situations these pieces arose from

your 4700 level is really well-done, i can feel the dark and oppressive atmosphere coming from the dungeon and the obelisk

I really like your hand drawn pictures and the shading is really well done, especially on your figure study. Leonardo also looks really great, and the textures look very convincing.
Badge-detailed. I love the detail on Leonardo

The traditional art pieces in here are very consistent.

All of the artwork has lots of attention to detail, especially in the pencil sketches.
You got the dark badge! I’ll admit this is based entirely on the first piece but the lighting is very dramatic and it lends the space a mysterious and ominous feel.
Detailed – A lot of your visual artwork is very cool & detailed, and given a writing concentration I’m sure your work in that field is as well. Awesome stuff!

I was really impressed by the obelisk cult level you made, looks really good well done!
