Introductions: Lauren Waddick

Hello! My name is Lauren, and I’m from Massachusetts. Growing up, I’ve always wanted learn how movies and video games where brought to life through both 2D and 3D art. I’m hoping to improve my skills in art and one day be apart of a team that works on the creative process of bringing stories to life.

My experience with art began back in the middle of high school where a teacher’s design classes helped motivate me to continue to pursue drawing. The teacher also ran a Dungeons and Dragons club which made me fall in love with creating characters and developing story’s with friends. I have taken courses in my time at WPI focusing on 3D modeling, both 2D and 3D animation, as well as game audio. All of which have been very fun and interesting!

Other creative arts I enjoy are things like figure painting. Going back to DnD, during the summer I liked to paint figures for the group I play with as well as for myself. I’m aiming to try to learn more about the process of 3D modeling to maybe one day be able to 3D print my own custom made figures to paint. I definitely have a long way to go with improving my 3D modeling skills so I’m hoping to be able to discipline myself into a daily schedule of 3D modeling over breaks to improve my work.

As of now my experience in making games is limited to text based/visual novel type games and a mini bullet hell game made during a summer camp that I unfortunately lost the files for. Some games that do inspire me artistically are:

  • Shadow of the Colossus: Very atmospheric and the designs of the bosses are so spectacular.
  • Many games from the Legend of Zelda series: Each iteration of the world of Hyrule is interesting and fun to explore.
  • Persona series: Love the style of the UI and overall presentation.
  • Okami: Japanese’s watercolor art style translates beautifully and is overall timeless.
  • Spyro: Childhood game that started my love for dragons and fantasy as a whole.

Here are some examples of my work!

Your style feels very familiar, with lots of dragons and mythical creatures. It reminds me of high fantasy/Dungeons and Dragons. That dragon sculpt is especially impressive, it reminds me a lot of playing Skyrim.

Your dragon 3D sculpt is what really stands out to me in your portfolio. You did a really good job of breaking down larger forms with lots of details like the scales and teeth. I’m also really impressed the idle animation is really smooth, I know from taking IMGD3101 that it’s really not easy to do that.

Detailed – There is soooo much detail here and it’s super cool! They all have that “the longer you look the more you notice” aspect and that’s a real treat!
