Kirsten Roethel: Character Animation

I decided to try to rig and animate my player character on my own, mostly because he has a tail that would need to be rigged separately anyway. I created looping walk, run, and idle animations. I decided against making a jump animation, as I feel allowing the player to jump is not very common for the cozy style game that I want to create. Here are the three character animations:

The quality isn’t too great (and the materials are not his actual textures), but they can be looped through YouTube (with a slight stutter due to a repeated frame at the beginning and end, which will NOT be in the actual game animation). I also plan to re-time some of them in Unity.

I’ve never been very strong with 3D animation, but overall I’m pretty happy with how they came out.

Additionally, I finished my first NPC character: A skeleton! He’s very stylized and low poly, and I think he fits the game world well.

I decided to use Mixamo for rigging and animating for the NPCs to save myself time. I want the skeleton(s) to have a simple idle, then a silly interaction like a dance when they are approached. Here are some of the Mixamo animations I found for him:

I’m still aiming for one more character, hopefully doing that this weekend. After that, I’ll be implementing the animations in game!
