For my project, I’d like to make a game in which you play as a superhero who needs to collect his superhero suits which are scattered across his secret lair. This is the main objective for the player, and I may also add in a timer feature to challenge the player to collect the suits as fast as possible. When they’re all collected, the unique suits will be displayed in cases with a screen with the time it took for you to collect them all.
I anticipate that my game will definitely be on the easier side, so the intended audience would probably be casual gamers who like to play non-competitive games. I want it to be more of an open-world sandbox that’s relaxing to explore the world. The main appeal will come from the art style and wanting to collect all the suits so you can see what they look like.
As for the art style, I’d really like to lean into stylized with simple shading and textures as well as exaggerated cartoony proportions. Despite having simple shading and textures, I still want the scene to be very detailed, and a lot of that will be drawn from 3D modeling and normal maps. I also want the scene to look both cluttered and clean at the same time, kind of like a mad scientist’s lab will lots of futuristic tech and gadgets lying around. To compare what I’m aiming for to some recognizable titles, I want it to look like if Blizzard made an animated Marvel movie.
This is my concept sketch. The superhero I have in mind is named Neon, and wears very colorful outfits so I tried to make a superhero lair that represents that. Scattered around the lair are some canisters that contain collectible costumes. The above two images are inspiration for the superhero suits. Like I said earlier, I want this to look like if Blizzard made a Marvel movie, so I think the “base” suits that the Avengers use with more realistic proportions mixed with the more vibrant, creative vibes from Overwatch would work really well. The above two images are concept art for Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse. This is one of my favorite movies ever and a huge source of inspiration for me. I really like this art and it features lots of aspects I want in my superhero base, including the super suit containers.I also couldn’t leave out concept art for Iron Man, probably the most iconic suit display. This image features a lot of technical gadgets I’d like present in my final, and I really like the color scheme. The above image features a meeting room in the superhero base, which I’d also like to include.I’d like the collectible superhero suits to be hidden around the map in futuristic canisters that look like this. The above image really captures the cluttered, mad science-y vibe I want to have.Lastly, this image really inspired me to have a section of the map dedicated to some type of chemical or potion brewing.
Great concept! I like the style of “Overwatch meets Marvel” as an aesthetic, and I think it will really work for a superhero lab like this. Your concept sketch is also really well done, it really shows what the environment will look like. Will the game have an isometric view like the sketch?
Thank you, doing an isometric view is actually not what I was planning and I hadn’t considered it, but now that you mention it I’ll have to look more into it.
“Blizzard made a Marvel Movie” is literally the best way you could describe this kind of aesthetic. I’m definitely interested in seeing your take on the “Blizzard look”. I also like the setting. I’m kind of a sucker when it comes to underground, super high-tech-like places. Do you plan on having the player walk around in this environment or rather just stick to a mouse only kind of control?
Back in the day when I watched Ironman 3, I dreamt of walking inside such a secret base with all the suits with super power around. So I am definitely one of your game’s target audiences. The concept sketch is very detailed and really sets up the scene. As everything will probably look very high-tech and futuristic, there might be a need for sophisticated lighting here and there. Do you have any plans for the lighting part?
To be completely honest with you, I haven’t worked with lighting a whole lot beyond very basic lighting in Unreal, but it’s definitely something I want to experiment with in this project and hopefully learn a lot about.
Superhero concept! I like the visuals of your concept art. Its designed very well and I feel like this concept art will help when you start 3d modeling. I especially like the idea of having the player start with no gear. My question is how you will guide the player to each super suit? I also want to ask if the player be collecting items that make up his super suits like gear or will the hero be collecting super suits (as in he has multiple suits)?
Man I love spiderverse too, and I can definitely see the inspiration in this idea. Also an excellent idea if you really like character and costume design, and I’m excited to see what you make for it! Is there a reason the superhero’s suits are all scattered everywhere? Was it laundry day? Did his fancy suit display case malfunction? Did a helpful pet stash his suits to keep them safe?

Thank you, I was likely going to let the player walk around in first person.
