Lauren Waddick – Game Concept

The player objective in my game would be to find and free a dragon mothers three lost children. Playing as said mother dragon who just escaped her own bindings, the player will have to explore a dungeon like environment to find all the keys to unlock each room her little dragons are trapped in. The mechanics would most likely walk around and explore the environment as I’m not confident in my ability to code in unity. It would be interesting to maybe add some sort of attack or small flight ability but I’ll have to see how far I can get.

The player character would be Lavina the dragon mother after waking up freed from her cell by a mysterious wizard sympathetic to her cause. The three children go by Sadiki, Termire and Persepora. The objects of the game that the player must find beside the location of the three dragons are the three keys to release them. Another mechanic that might be interesting is some sort of call mechanic that the baby dragons would mimic quietly to help track them down.

The world that the game takes place in would be very medieval fantasy inspired. Where settlements of both man and monster are found throughout it and very often find conflict with one another. Hunters are constantly on the prowl for creatures of any kind. For their parts are valued highly as many humans aspiring to learn magic can use them to control the elements themselves.

The audience the game would aim for is fantasy lover’s as well as those who enjoy a story of a family trying to survive in the world. The game style would feel adventure based in the exploration of the dungeon and perhaps stealth based in maneuvering around it. It will most likely also be in the 3rd person view.

The art style I’m hoping to achieve would be a mix of the cartoony but still have some realistically textured objects and creature designs of Spyro and the Monster Hunter Stories and baseline Monster Hunter games.

I really like the fantasy aspect of this concept, it reminds me of a Dungeons and Dragons quest. The art and references are super cool, I like how you gave each dragon a distinct look and personality! Since your characters are dragons, will the environment be huge (based on human scale), or will the dragons be a bit smaller in size to fit?

    1. Lauren says:

Thank you! The hallways will be designed to fit larger creatures but will most likely still keep some close space of being locked in a dungeon. The plan right now is to have the main dragon be double the size of a human and the little dragons to only go up to about a knee height.

As someone who spent a lot of time drawing a lot of dragons, I am very excited to see an entire game from the perspective of them. The models will be interesting to rig and I’m excited to see them, and wish you luck! I love the character designs already. Will the mysterious wizard show up at any point in the game, or are they gone after the beginning?

    1. Lauren says:

Thanks a bunch! I haven’t rigged a quadruped before so it’ll be an interesting challenge that I hope I’ll be able to do! Most likely the wizard will be gone after the beginning of releasing the player, but if the game were to ever continue beyond one level they’d definitely show up again!

I really like the distinct looks of the three children dragons. Their looks give them different characteristics, and I look forward to seeing interactions between them. I especially like the purple one.
Will the wizard be in the game too? If so what will the wizard look like?

    1. Lauren says:

Thank you! I’m going to try to include a model of the wizard in the game if time allows! Most likely the wizard will be very bundled up in cloaks and a mask to keep their identity a secret in what their doing!

I really like your concept art, especially the way you did coloring and shading. The white highlights look really good. My question is, have you thought about making this game a dungeon crawler where the dungeon randomizes each time you play, or would it be one map?

    1. Lauren says:

Thank you very much! One map it will be, but a randomized dungeon room design would be very cool if I had the programming knowledge to pull it off in the future!

  5. Daniel says:

I like dragons and the designs of these concept drawings are sick! I am excited to see how these designs come to life as a 3d model. My question is what perspective is this game going to be shown. Is the player going to play this game from a first-person perspective or will the dragon be seen from a 3rd person perspective. I also have one other question are their going to be enemy characters in this game like adventures or possible traps set by the wizard?

    1. Lauren says:

Thank you so much! I’m definitely aiming for 3rd person perspective as I think it would be neat to see the player character and try to rig up a dragon. Most likely no enemy characters but definitely have a trap in mind to try to implement! Going to try to make a magical eye on a pedestal that scans the room and recaptures you should you get caught in it’s sight.
