Michael Weideman: Introduction

Hi.

First off my name is Michael.

A few quick fire things about me; I’m an IMGD BA major from CA. I’m currently in the process of moving here for good though.

Art to me is turning out to be a potential career. I started my time in college thinking that CS was my to be major but it took only a year for me to learn that I really didn’t enjoy that. It was then that I took some art classes and it really clicked.

In terms of experience, I’ve got no art experience outside of classes. I’ve taken a digital painting and digital art classes as well as a 3D modeling class and an environmental modeling.

Something I want to get better at is realism with my 3D models. After taking that 3D modeling class, I’ve looked on my first few works and compared them to the professor’s work and I just want to get from here to there. That is my current goal.

I’ve made quite a lot of non-computer games for other IMGD classes. Board games, card games, dice games, etc. I’ve got the game design aspect down, I’m just iffy on the actual creation part of it.

Other than making games or drawing/modeling, I actually quite enjoy writing. I don’t do it as often as I would probably enjoy but the times that I do I find myself losing track of time. I also have a very long history with music. I started playing piano at the age of 4 and only stopped taking lessons at 15. I don’t really play piano anymore but I’ve taken a liking to drums as of the last few years so that’s cool.

Artistically inspiring? I’ve got a game that I find inspiring for each aspect of games in general. In terms of visuals alone? Destiny 2. The skyboxes and character design in the game are immaculate and amazing. Audio/Music? Either Persona 5 Royal or Risk of Rain 2, both of which have some of the best sound tracks in all of videos games in my opinion. Finally, gameplay? There is something about the gameplay loop and difficulty in Elden Ring that pulls me back in so often.

Here’s a little look into some of the stuff I’ve done so far. (I’d post some videos of me playing piano and drums but I’d rather keep those embarrassing videos to my self.)

My first full 3D modeled character (my attempt at Malenia from Elden Ring)
A painting I made in my digital painting class. (A fake movie poster)

I did end up making a game that was posted on the steam workshop for Tabletop Simulator. I made this game with a team. It’s a pretty simple card game. Here’s the link: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2773700381

A photoshopped portrait of me I made a while ago.
Me in 2017(?) on my first ever drum set (also yes at the time my hair was dyed red.
Me in 2012 playing the piano for my school’s jazz band. (Can you tell I’m running out of material?)

I wrote a short story in another class I took, but I don’t know of a way to put it in here without just copy pasting the whole thing. You’ll just have to take my word for it.

Anyways, that’s all I got. Thanks.

Your Malenia model has great attention to detail with all the folds on the dress, the indentations on the helmet, the strings on the middle of the dress, and the way the cape wraps around to the front as well. Great work!
