(Posting late because everything is on the school computers)
Progress has been unusual. I’ve never done a concept sketch of the full level because it’s been difficult for me to visualize how everything connects in 3D space. After coming up with a bare bones helm/control deck, I realized it would be advantageous to start by building the spaces I know exist within the Starship and then connect them later.
The first garden belongs to the Celestial King, Vega of Lyra. Even though they definitely won’t appear in the level (braided braids and rainbow white light would be too complicated), they’re one of the few denizens of the Starship so they deserve a space that reflects their calm, collected, and kind nature.
The second garden belongs to Ahadi of Argo, the architect behind the Starship. They ended up borrowing some personality traits from another prolific inventor of mine, including some of the clutter. In the end, I figured cubic bismuth-like crystals would fit, and I made sure they had enough working space for their projects.
In terms of immediate things I still need to make, I need to make a sky box, create gardens for three other characters, and create a layout for the archive. I also need to figure out how to connect all the elements of the ship in a way that doesn’t look specifically like floating platforms and helps reinforce the fact that this is a fantasy setting and not a sci-fi one.
In terms of technical aspects I need to solve, the first is assigning colors to individual objects without needing to create a whole new material (all my objects are currently set to white). The second, which will be more difficult, is allowing the player to walk along platforms that curve in all sorts of directions (like in Super Mario Galaxy).
