Braden Arnold – Game Concept Proposal and Sketch

This game takes place in the mid-20th century in a city inspired by New Orleans. The player is an aspiring musician coming to make their mark on the jazz capital of the world. The player will be able to explore Lynette’s, the hot new jazz bar in town. In order to get to perform at the bar, however, the player must help out the members of the house band, as they have had their instruments stolen, misplaced, broken, forgotten, etc. Each member of the band will give the player a unique task/quest to complete regarding their instrument. Once the player collects, fixes, or finds all of the band’s instruments, they have proven themselves and may take the stage.

The game will function as a third person point-and-click adventure, similar to Grim Fandango, The Secret of Monkey Island, and Machinarium. The game will be fairly simple and geared towards a casual audience, but there can be room to add more complicated quest elements to the game. Those who like music, simple adventure, and historical settings will enjoy this game. To appeal to the music-loving audience, I want to include references to famous jazz artists and musicians of the time. For those who appreciate history, I want to be accurate in my representations of architecture and interior design.

The map of the game will be confined to a fairly small area, but there will be various sections of Lynette’s that the player will explore, including the exterior, bar area, stage, green room, and back alley. While the map may be small, it will have many interesting places to go, and people and things to interact with.

The style will draw heavily from New Orleans during the 1940s. The buildings will take from the Creole style of architecture that is seen in New Orleans’ French Quarter. The environment will be dark, but lit by street lamps and signs outside, and dim lamps inside. The inside of the bar will have a cozier, welcoming atmosphere to contrast with the cold, busy, and urban atmosphere of the city street/back alley. I plan for the art style to be low-poly, but still feel realistic with regards to proportions and atmosphere.
