Oliver (Shard) Rayner – Introduction

Hello people, my name is Oliver but other people also call me Shard, short for Shardonney. I was born in London but grew up in the capital of Rhode Island, Providence. Art currently fits in games I am currently developing and also my goal to become a UX/UI designer. I am mostly self taught in coding and animation due to having to wear many hats when working on a small tech project. I have learned a lot on the technical side of art through WPI and on the traditional side I do quick sketches usually under ten minutes because I started while riding the Metro between stops in London. Something that I would like to improve in my art making is efficiently using color more quickly and relying less on the bucket tool.

When making games, some have disappeared while others I still have around. The first game I worked on that I was lead of animation and audio was a game called Mechanism that I was proud of and was made in Gamemaker. Sadly the assets were not saved due to my inexperience so I have nothing to show. The other games I worked on I did more coding than art, but I always viewed myself as the bridging gap between art and tech when making a game just as a UX Designer is the bridging of the gap between developer and client.

I like to practice music with my guitar and piano but I am always down to play on any electronic instrument. I sometimes do photography and I really like taking pictures of landscapes or people and animals doing interesting things. Somethings that inspire my work is Don Hertzfeldt, Shadow of the Colossus, and Little Nightmares. I would say that I try to do my own things and I usually will do the thing that is on my mind when it comes to projects, but I always will listen to others feedback.

Works:

2D

An app mid-fidelty prototype ready for user testing.
First 2D animation showcase I’m most proud of.
An animation interacting with a handmade controller from Interactive Electronic Arts, everything took about a day to complete.
Photo made in photoshop Freshman year at WPI.
Was made with caligraphy, but somehow the photo taken of it looks pixelated.
Omelette I used in a game I made by myself called Quickgig where you are a superhero trying to make a living wage as a waiter in a restaurant.

-3D

This is more to prove my 3D animation experience and in order to understand the video I recommend looking at the kickstarter video for the game the Blunted Panda.
Carnage made in Z Brush, the longest art piece I worked on, probably three weeks.

-Traditional Speed (Influenced by destinations)

Made on the Metro after seeing a Woman caring her dog in a purse.
Food Giver was an app I wanted to design for my portfolio but looking at the market I pivoted towards Boxers (above). Drawings were done from Splatoon copies and influences.
Robot I drew on the way to Boston to attend a UX meetup that consists of a phone head and wrenches.

I really like the multiple mediums and you have a quirkiness to your art carried throughout all the mediums that make them really fun to look at.

Your Carnage model in particular is super impressive; the work you’ve put into it really shows! Your app work is also really impressive, I have a lot of respect for UI designers. Good job!

Impressive: You have such a large tool box to work with while creating your art. It’s so cool to see how you use what medium or tool for which project.

I think I might go with funny since a lot of your work and skill seems to connect very distinct things and tries to create logic from them. I assume that is considered humor.

    Quirky

There is a ton of really unique artwork here over many different artistic disciplines. I can’t wait to see that uniqueness and creativity in your final project!

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t entirely sure what was happening in the video with the tree but I liked it! I also really like your carnage model!

I love the little sketches you have. They have a fun, silly tone to them.

I have always found it hard to make quick sketches with real life objects, but your sketches seem really nice. I like the contrast and lighting of the photoshopped image of the Innovation Studio.

The animation is undoubtedly the most interesting: even if you turn off the sound, the character’s body movements, including shrugging, arm waving, etc., can make the audience feel the character’s personality characteristics vividly. It’s very good!
