David Fournet – Introduction

Hi everybody! My name is David Fournet, and I’m from Tulsa, Oklahoma. I’m a senior, a robotics engineering major (I know, probably weird for this class but hey), and I’m also minoring in media arts. Currently, because of the field I’m majoring in, art doesn’t necessarily have an academic or professional role in my life right now, but art is where my real interest lies. I’m hoping to eventually make game design/art my career and work on robotics as more of a hobby. I have been trying to squeeze as many art and design classes into my schedule as possible and really work on building my skills and hopefully a portfolio. I also work on my own artistic and creative pursuits outside of school by practicing traditional and digital 2D art and physical sculpture, as well as making videos for my two YouTube channels, Dac of All Trades (art and build videos) and Dac56 (gaming). I hope that through practice I can build up my skills and become competitive in looking for a creatively based career.

My experience in art predominantly comes from self-study and practice, however, I have finished my arts requirements at WPI in visual arts through Essentials of Art, 3D Modeling 1, Digital Imaging, and the Figures in Motion Practicum. Outside of classes, I work mostly digitally now on Photoshop making 2D illustrations. I have had a few freelance jobs creating logos for various companies, and also make a small amount from my art YouTube channel’s Patreon. I always like to expand my skills as an artist and have worked in a variety of mediums such as clay sculpture, resin pouring and sculpture, charcoal, ink, pencil, pastels, pixel art, 2D digital illustration, 3D digital sculpture, and 2D animation.

Personally, I am really looking to improve my skills in making usable video game assets. I worked as part of a team over the summer in a month-long game jam where we created a 2D Metroidvania-style game called “Crossroads.” I found this experience incredibly fun and wanted my next game to be in a 3D space so I can begin to widen my abilities and portfolio. I would also like to work on my lighting and composition in a 2D space, so I am taking Concept Art and Creative Illustrations this term as well.

My experience making games is probably more limited than others. I have worked on the above-mentioned Crossroads game as the lead artist. I have also coded datapacks that add additional dimensions to Minecraft for a SMP server of YouTube content creators that I run. I am also now helping on a year-long project to create a turn-based fantasy RPG video game with some IMGD students.

My main avenues of artistic expression are all visual, however, I have also explored and enjoyed acting. I would like to learn to be more musically adept as well but find this to be pretty difficult for me.

Some games and shows that I really enjoy the art styles of include:

GamesShows
Dead Cells, Hollow Knight, Dishonored, Breath of the Wild, Ori, Wizards of Legend, Crawl, SekiroKipo, Dragon Prince, Hilda, Infinity Train, What If?, Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss, Young Justice, ATLA

and plenty more, but those are what I can think of off the top of my head.

I’m looking forward to working with everyone and I’m very very excited for this class as a whole. I can’t wait to see what everyone creates!

I would choose the impressive badge, since all of this work, the various mediums and styles is described perfectly with that word.

You seem to take a lot of inspiration from existing works of art, which is totally cool! Your art feels comfy and recognisable.

I looked a bit at your youtube channels as well and I’m really impressed by the quality of your content! As someone who also wants to be an online content creator I understand the struggle and empathize with your work ethic; your art is really good for online content creation and in particular you’ve got a really good grasp on anatomy. It’s all just very eye-catching and well put together. Well done!

All your art is distinctly rendered and gives off a good sense of you as an artist. Everything seems very crisp and well defined but still all distinctly “You”. Very fun all around.

Your art style reminds me of some of the cartoons I liked to watch, so it hits a fimiliar place in my art. Nice pops of colors as well!

All your pieces stick out and all of them show a wide variety of talent and different techniques in your skill set.

    Familiar!

David! I thought I recognized you but I wasn’t sure because of the mask. It is funny that a couple of RBE majors from a freshman GPS class end up crossing our senior year in an IMGD art class due to mutual passion.

Coincidences aside, I love your illustrations and how well they read. Your artwork is super impressive and I am subscribing to your youtube channel.

That original character design reminds me of a couple of super heroes I’ve seen before. I also really like the style they’re drawn in. It reminds me a lot of comics I’ve seen and read.

I like the way your drawings are able to portray so many emotions. I also really liked the YouTube video showing all your projects. Your drawings feel as though you had a lot of fun drawing them, which gives them a positive vibe.

The Original Character Design is my favorite.
The action design of the characters at different stages is very impressive: idle->switching->rush out; Although there are not many colors, it feels very comfortable. The pink-green shoes make people basically unable to look away. Your character design is really great!
