Yuan-Liang(Tom) Liao

大家好~ My name is Yuan-Liang Liao(just call me Tom), and I am from Beijing, the capital of China. I major in CS and in both tech and art of IMGD. I do not want to take online classes so I took a gap year and spend nearly 15 month at home pursuing my interest. Before my gap year, I mainly regard myself as a tech guy since I specialized in math and computer programming.

Nevertheless, an encounter exposed me to artistic creation. During the epidemic, there were very few people around my house, and people barely go out. But there were always some cars coming to my next door. I was too boring to stay at home by myself, so I came to visit. It turned out that it was an art studio with many skillful artists in it. I introduced myself as a neighbor and they show their art works to me passionately. I was very shocked and from that day on, I would go to the studio every day to see their creations. Until one day, I also started sketching from the basic. I have eight professional artists teaching me from basic. As someone who have never drawn a thing, practice was joy of success in pain. It was scary drawing besides them, but they are just like me, young, ambitious, and progressing, we had no distance. Now drawing just become a part of my life and I guess will continue doing so in the future.

The best thing after I start drawing is that I tend to pay more attention to the things besides me. I would pay close attention to shapes, colors, and composition of different things. And because I have these observations, I have discovered many beautiful things around, making me enjoy more of my life.

Basic

I love water paints!

Oil paints need patience, indeed.
Sketching — Like Teacher, Like Friend(亦师亦友)

Looking back from what I can do, I can’t believe all of this is in one year! Truly appreciate every teacher who have helped me. Last night in Beijing, I drew this when packing up everything for the flight to Boston.

Detailed- I love your piece “My Teacher, My Friend”! Your attention to the subject’s wrinkles and facial contours is amazing. Even though the viewer can’t see the subject’s entire face, you still conveyed his expression to the fullest.

Impressive – Your work is phenomenal and I would never have guessed you started so recently. I especially like the drawing “Like Teacher, Like Friend” — the hatching looks very intentional and looks amazing.

Impressive: Immediately I was drawn in by your pieces and It was a pleasure looking at your hatching technique among the teapot and the “Like Teacher, Like Friend” piece. Although the man is turned away you captured a relaxed/natural expression perfectly. I never would have guessed you’ve only been working for a year!

Detailed: Your rendering and silhouettes are precise and confident. Your attention to light and how it falls and casts shadows are amazing, especially for one year of drawing! I’ll echo some of the others and comment on your “Like Teacher, Like Friend” . Your line work and shading has rhythm yet maintains that accuracy – impressive stuff.

Detailed: So you’ve tried water paints, oil paints, sketches and digital art in a fairly short time. But cross all those mediums, your work has an impressive amount of detail. (including the sketches that you say you spent barely any time on)

Unrelated, but I always find it impressive when foreign students succeed at WPI. It takes a lot of drive to bring yourself across the world every year, especially since English likely isn’t your first language.

Impressive – I really like the realism in your work. I also like the sharks drawing because it can be used as concept for a very interesting game.

Detailed – Wow, looking at all your pieces of art I never would have thought that they were all done by the same person. They’re all very unique and each one is in a different style, but they’re all very well done and look like a lot of time was put into them! I especially like the oil painting, the reflections on the water look awesome.
