Will Aaron- Interactive Touch Concept Sketch

For my interactive touch project, I really wanted to somehow bring in poetry to the audio tools available with Max and what we’ve already tried with the Makey Makey. One of my recent favorite poets is Fahria Roisin. She’s an Australian-Canadian poet who writes about her identity as a queer South Asian Muslim woman. My idea is to make a mock Sitar using conductive string to mimic the sitar sound and feel, and while the participant plays the instrument, they’ll be shown one of Roisin’s poems which will animate itself around their sitar playing. My question is “How much of the sitar playing should be based on the participants movements, versus using pre-recording sounds?”

I have a neutral question: How many poem options will you have available?

I think the sitar playing should be linked to the poem playing in some sense. I am not familiar with their poetry so I may be incorrect, but as it stands the two ideas seem a little disconnected. Maybe each string plays a line/part of her poem, and a short animation plays reflecting what they are saying/what it means.

With the sitar model, I believe it would make the most sense if the focus was on the different positions for each of the different sections of the animation instead of the sounds themselves. I would like to ask regarding this project, are there any other sounds or animations involved in this project? If the input is the main focus, that’s understandable, but I would recommend adding voiceover for the poems if that wasn’t the plan already.

I think having as much influenced by the participant’s movements as possible would best reinforce this idea of “playing the poem”.

I think that the more the user’s input affects the piece, the better. I also think the user’s input should affect the poetry if possible and not just the sitar, or otherwise there could be a stronger link between the poetry and the sounds.

The sitar model looks awsome and I cant wait to see how it would come out. As a response to the artist question, I would say it might be better if the sitar plays pre-recorded sound otherwise it would only be able to play maximum 6 notes. I also have a question, would the sitar playing affect the animation of the poem on the screen?
