Final Project Proposal: Scary Reverb

For the final project, and in the upcoming celebration of one of my favorite holidays, I would like to do a project where users can adjust how spooky a song is based on the number of participants and the lighting of the room.

One person can change the lights of either the entire room, or nearby interface, to adjust the pitch of a spooky song playing on Max. The pitch will become lower in brighter conditions, and higher in darker conditions.

A number of other people must interact with the interface, likely through MakeyMakey, and activate an echo effect where the song sounds like it has multiple performers playing. For example, if three people are interacting with the interface, then the song will sound like three people are performing it.

The song I am planning to use is one of my personal favorites from Cartoon Network’ s Over the Garden Wall:

Does anyone have ideas to make the song sound spookier? The goal is to make people feel uncomfortable in darker conditions.

To match the theme of Halloween, a few songs that come to my mind are:
    -The intro to thriller
    -Monster Mash

OR songs from “The Nightmare Before Christmas” / “Corpse Bride” soundtrack

Neutral Question: In what way are people meant to interact with the interface? Changing the lights for the light sensor is definitely one interaction, but it seems that several people are supposed to be able to interaction with the Makey Makey at once.

Exactly! Although I was aiming for 3, or more people.

Old-timey Halloween songs that are all crackly from a turn table could be very cool to play/interact with.

Some creepy harpsichord songs would be amazing for this project. You could investigate keys to limit it too, and record them in harpsichord to really get that spooky vibe.

I think there are many different songs based on the mood. For example Spooky Skeleton would be a more dance like song. Where if you wanted to get more serious you can use something like Aggie Fights from Paranorman.

  6. If the users interacting via makeymakey keep touching the input, can they control the intensity of the echo effect?

    1. Stanley says:

I was hoping that more people adds more echoes.
