My project for interactive touch, like the concept explores reality and how others’ perception can ground our own. The physical portion includes three faces with touch points on the eyes and ears. Each ear plays three notes, and each eye animates away a filter on a digital art piece. Once all the eyes have been touched, the digital piece can be seen. Left alone, the image slowly warps back to its original state. The interaction is a statement on truth and reality’s fleeting nature. Another possible name for the project was “fleeting truths”.
For the physical portion I had conductive tape hidden behind the cloth that wraps behind the cardboard.
Artist Question: Is the message clear through the interaction? What does the piece evoke? Any other advice is welcome!
The distortion shader effectively communicates the distorted reality. A neutral question: what made you decide to go for a written title in the middle of the piece as opposed to none?
It actually didn’t have the written title at first, but the piece felt a bit empty and hard to understand. I felt that the inclusion of the text grounded the digital component, while enhancing the message.
Your piece was great at conveying a warped reality with the use of distortive fluidity. A question I have is: What significance does your text have as It remains constant throughout the piece?
The constant text is a matter of maintaining a concrete perspective of an individual reality in a very fluid digital piece. Our realities are isolated to a certain extent, only shared as we cross paths.
I noticed the video and the interactive board are interconnected by the tree and its root. As a response to the artist question, I think the emotion behind the piece came through very effectively. It could be just me, but I did not recognize the interactive parts are actually eyes and ears of three different people. I like the abstraction aesthetically very much but also it kind of prevented me from understanding the story behind. Is there any particular reson behind why there are three people on the board?
I actually don’t mind that some people don’t see the faces, it highlights peoples different perceptions, some see shapes, and some construct images out of them. That was my goal with faces – I wanted them to be abstract shapes that might just come together into forms.
I really love how the digital aspect with the tree ties to the roots on the physical piece! The connection there is really prominent but neutral question, what made you choose to display a tree?
Great question, I actually struggled with the digital picture, because the message lies more in the method of getting to the image rather than the end point. So the end point had to be something that did not distract from the message too much, but something that could represent reality. So I chose a tree, a being that is grounded and solid in mysterious ways we might not understand, reflecting a “grounded” reality.
The piece definitely, to me, evokes mysteriousness and makes me feel as though I am inside my own psyche, just floating around. The project definitely targets a part of us that is more subconscious and hard to really truly describe, the feeling of needing others’ perspectives to ground your own reality. I think that makes this a wonderful art piece, as you can describe that feeling through touch and interaction instead of words.
I really enjoyed this piece! The color palette used with the dark, gloomy colors evokes feelings and emotions of mystery and loneliness. And the warped, “demonic” like faces definitely show the scariness and craze of being alone. In some scenes I feel that the bold text in the middle sometimes hides the full warping of the images, so perhaps having the text fade/melt into the image and come back after the warp might make things more clearer to see?
This piece to me invokes self reflection. I really like the message and how the tree slowly comes into existence after a while.
To me, I think the piece evokes a somewhat uneasiness and distancing one from oneself. It’s actually quite interesting
