Hannah Belan – Introduction

on

Howdy everyone!

My name is Hannah Belan – feel free to call me Shiib since there are three of us Hannahs in this class alone- and I’m from here in Worcester County, down by the border of Connecticut 🙂 This year I aim to buff out my 3D modeling work and make it more acceptable to show in my portfolio as well as continue with the current development of my 2D digital artwork. In the future I would like to find a job working on creating 3D models, however I think I could find happiness as long as I am in a creative field. Artistically, in recent years at least, I tend to find myself gravitating towards digital creation methods, but I started out and still find relaxation in traditional arts such as watercoloring, sketching, pottery, and oil painting. In my free-time I like to watercolor and can often be found around campus doing it (I’d love it if you joined in if you spot me and am totally open to sharing my resources)! When it comes to programming I still think I need a lot of work before I can develop anything worthwhile, but I am excited to learn and grow.

When it comes to any recent work I am proud of there is only one major project that I’ve been continuously developing that feels worthwhile enough to share. I have a creative universe with 12 characters – one for each month – whose personalities correlate to my seasonal affective disorder and how that particular point in the year makes me feel. It’s been 8 years since I created the first character of this world and overall it’s been a very fun journey for me to experience more, developing the characters and the physical world itself as I grow. While it may not be a single piece of artwork that I have to share, there is a lot that this world has done to help me better myself as an artist as well as express myself in a productive manner.

I’m so excited to see what you all create and work with you this term!

Detailed – I love the backstory to the project and how it represents something more. I also like how well-detailed the images are and how unique they are.

Detailed: Your ability to come up with characters who even have planned out backstories that relate back to you personally creates a close tie with the artist to the art. The fact that you’ve been in this creative process for years shows your attention to detail and inspiring care for this artwork! The Luigi surprised me, but in a good way, it’s such an impressive spin-off with all the thought-out shading and outfits you drew.

Colorful: Your use of color is meaningful and makes your style really clear. I like how your colors hover around that green and warm, gentle oranges and pinks- a great use of complements.

    Impressive

I can tell from your description and your art style that you have a greater vision for your work. This portfolio doesn’t look like a random assortment of images, it’s clear that you have something greater which you are working to build. I am impressed that you’ve had that commitment for so long even at a young age.

Also unrelated but I’m gonna need some context for the Waluigis.

The Waluigi was an example of cursed art I like to make to blow off steam. Other similar creations include Centaur-Kermit, Thicc Kirby, Business Garfield, and a swan with human legs who just wants to *dance*. 🙂

  5. wandress says:

gorgeous- Wow! That art is incredible! I really liked seeing the Waluigi models start as 2d art, and then it being translated to 3d art. The colors you use make me think of the word “sweet” and your art style really shines in these pieces

  6. hxu2 says:

The first word that came to my mind was actually “cursed” when I see the Waluigi model lol. Very colorful works. The figure drawings are so good!

  7. himiller says:

Funny: That waluigi has me DYYYYING of laughter omg. Your art style always interests me- its so cute and expressive. I cant wait to see what you make this term!!

  8. Will says:

    Quirky- Waluigi’s really got a glowup. 10/10.

  9. Dylan says:

Cute: there’s a great amount of positive energy present in your work, it’s a joy to look at. Nice!

DARK: I do wanna say right off the bat that I’m really sorry I didn’t see yours first to add the funny badge, as the Waluigi Magical Girl absolutely killed me. Back on the main, I am at least somewhat familiar with Seasonal Affective Disorder thanks to my girlfriend, and that it can mess with a person’s mood real bad. Though you haven’t shown it, I get a vivid image the mood each one portrays, and I can only imagine how surreal or terrifying the worst months of the year could be. Although the summery ones could balance it out (assuming it works in a similar way for you) I can already see that these characters of yours will have a wide range that could provide a lot of interesting and deeply emotional interactions. Otherwise, the art you’ve made so far is nice, and I hope that things go well for you on Twitch!

Clever- Your art style is very fun and witty. I love your use of color that also conveys playfulness.

  12. Jasmine says:

Funny – The waluigi pieces definitely caught my eye immediately lmaooo. The rest of your art is also super gorgeous and I love the idea of the seasonal characters — it seems very personal and like a great way to express your own feelings throughout the seasons.

  13. Oliver says:

Impressive – There is a lot of great work here and many great reference to go into 3D models such as what you did with improved Waluigi.

  14. Sydney says:

Cute – I love your style so much! The rounded shapes and the colors give your work a cute vibe overall but there is so much time, effort, and skill behind it all! You make everything pop off the screen and come to life so well! The emotes are also amazing.

  15. Neha says:

Colorful – I loved how colorful and playful your drawings are! I really adore your cartoonish style it’s very cute!

  16. Stanley says:

I think I may go with either ‘gorgeous’ and/or ‘impressive’ since your work is great but I also did a similar thing when I was younger by creating versions of characters I liked and added them to my own universe.

  17. Kat says:

Thought provoking- I love how you created a universe based off of seasonal affective disorder. I would love to hear more about it!

  18. Carrie says:

Cute – these characters are all very adorable :)) isn’t it so tragic that the acronym for seasonal affective disorder is just SAD …………….. also i want to redraw the cleaning products since my art has improved since then >:-) i hope to see more stuff from you <333
