Garet Mildish

My name is Garet Mildish and I’m from Hudson, not terribly far from the WPI campus as a matter of fact. In terms of art, I don’t usually focus on visual arts since I see myself as more of a writer and audio person. As such, most of my projects focus on writing or audio, which are more central towards my personal goals. My experience with traditional art is very minimal, as I never had much passion for it as I grew up. As for digital art, I got an interest mainly in the art of making resources for my Dungeons and Dragons games and for memes. My primary resources for these art-based projects are Paint 3D, a slightly sophisticated version of Microsoft Paint, and Audacity, a well-known program for audio editing. Outside of these more digital mediums, I am a big fan of writing and music, and have practiced theater and singing in the past. In terms of inspiration, I have some for writing and one for music. For writing, I’m fond of R.A. Salvatore, Margaret Weis, and Tracy Hickman, who made many different books of fantasy with excellent character, intriguing detail, and generally excellent worlds. For music, I always think of Weird Al Yankovic because of how much he diversifies his music, and how his legacy has successfully stretched to decades. In terms of projects, I haven’t been able to create much, in terms of actual games, something I actively want to achieve. I have worked on a few projects relating to Dungeons and Dragons though, and I consider the progress I’ve made with one book to be notable. Though it’s nowhere near done and It’s not a project I see being published anytime soon, I hope that one day I can start make quality homebrew on a regular basis. Other than what I’ve said so far, there’s not much else to say. I’m a fan of cartoons, manga, and comics, and they’ve also served as a lesser inspiration for some of my ideas, and otherwise I hope that we can all have loads of fun with this class!

Though-provoking: Your music made me feel like I was in a video game! So it made me visualize scenarios where I might hear this. Also, the sketches of the D&D weapons were interesting as I wanted to understand more about the game and possible characters that go hand in hand with your art.

Detailed – It’s really apparent how much detail and thought you put into your game concept documents with how descriptive they are!

thought-provoking – your music would fit into an old-timey video game world so well. It’s so good about setting the mood and creating an experience

Clever – since you seem to go an extra mile for what you care about. Although I suppose ‘inventive’ also falls into this category.

Thought-provoking: It’s interesting to see a portfolio with such a broad range. Many of us have work in different mediums, but you have work to show from a variety of fields, some of which don’t require any of the same skillsets. It makes me curious to see what you’ll end up pursuing for your career!

Funny/Clever – I like the name Cell Team six and how there are sections that slow down blood travel like in real blood vessels. With a couple of sound effects I can see this being an effective teaching tool.

Inventive – The audio samples are very well mixed. They both set really good tones and guide the listener to imagine certain scenes and settings. I also really like your drawings and descriptions for the different weapons and all the planning behind your DND campaigns; they are very clearly thought out and lovingly crafted.

Thought provoking – It’s really cool to see all of the background work that goes into a game. Seeing it laid out like a tree is kind of fun to see aswell.
