For my project I just wanted to bring attention to the wonders of having a place you can call home. I think it’s important that we who have homes appreciate that ability to sleep, eat, and exist in a sheltered, warm place.
I want to create a diorama, mostly out of cardboard, that represents the interior of a home. There will be various items and furniture to give that homey feeling. Some furniture that I know I want to implement that will be interactive is a piano and a fireplace. I also want to have a small cat that exists within the home that is interactive as well. I do want to have more things be interactive.
When an object is interacted with, an animation will play on the computer as well as some sounds that one would typically hear if they were actually interacting with the object in real life.
I also want to decorate the house excessively. I want plants in the negative space that furniture does not fill. I also want to put a lot of visuals on the wall. I want the house to look like it has really been made “home” by whoever lives there. I want to show some of their personality through the décor.
My question: What else could I add that would be interactive? Anything that you think I should replace with something else (i.e. replace the piano with a guitar, etc etc)?
Some aspects that could be interactive is a grandfather clock that ticks or maybe artwork around the house that can shift side-to-side?
A book would fit the vibe! Maybe a poem pops up when you interact with it.
One possible interaction could be a vacuum cleaner, where it sweeps over the floor.
I see a TV in the drawing and I think that would be nice to add, probably have a quick animation of a tv turning on and off when pressed.
I really like this idea, especially with how we’ve all come so familiar with our homes in the past year and half where we might not appreciate these things as much anymore. I could totally imagine this with a soft, pastel color scheme to make it almost like the lo-fi girl and her room. Do you have an idea about how realistic you’d like this to be?
The diorama sounds great to represent the presence of a home. This question isn’t very neutral but I’m not sure how else to phrase it, so treat it as a suggestion instead I guess. But do you think that the appreciation for a home in your display might still be taken for granted if we don’t have something to contrast it with in your piece? Like a representation of all these time home things, and another intertwined representation of their lack.
For more item interaction ideas, maybe there could be a coffee or a beverage of some sort. You could have the sounds of something brewing or steeping or pouring. I don’t know the size of the diorama, but I often associate mantles or shelves as being places for travel souvenirs like snow globes, so maybe something could be done with that too. Lastly, to add on to the plant idea, you could have it be watered when interacted with.
Some more interactive object ideas that I thought of are a lamp or some sort of lighting, a window that the curtains could be drawn or something could happen outside, a drink/food item that gets consumed and disappears when interacted with, or some weights or a treadmill or some type of exercise machine
I was wondering, for the clutter will it be more of an organized and cleaned sort of clutter or a slightly messy lived in sort of clutter? (Sorry if that doesn’t make much sense, think of like sims type of clutter vs actual clutter)
For adding more interaction you could utilize paper circuits or leds that light up when you touch the fireplace, would add a cute touch and emulate a fire look
How would you like people to interact with a diorama?
To answer your question, I think adding a small pet would be kind of a fun addition to the piece. Like a small dog or cat that would just bark/meow when you tapped it.
Whoops! I apologize, I wasn’t able to see the note about the cat.
