Data Project: Teen Vaping Rise in 2019

Vaping is becoming more and more of a trend among teenagers, even bleeding into middle schoolers’ lives. This early exposure to nicotine presents a very high risk of future nicotine addiction. While vaping is seen as the more “healthy” alternative, it is a gateway for children and teenagers into the world of nicotine and nicotine products.

The graphic shows three Juuls (popular vaping device) with bars inside of each. Each bar is a percentage of teenagers that said they tried vaping products. The tallest bars represent 12th graders, the second tallest bars represent 10th graders, and the third tallest bars represent 8th graders. The first Juul represents statistics from 2017, the second Juul represents statistics from 2018, and the third Juul represents statistics from 2019.

When the user clicks + holds down on a Juul, smoke will quickly billow out. If the player clicks, holds, and drags across the three Juuls, all three will billow smoke out slowly at the same time.

Changes I made since the last sketch: Added material to the Juul so that they are shiny and look much more like a Juul, however this sacrifices the transparency that the Juuls in the sketch had. Made the bars different shades of red to show increasing intensity.

Hello Carrie! I notice your color pallete is muted, and somber. The smoke and background both accentuate this as well. Each of the colors match with each other, so the more intense ones are easy to tell. I think the colors you use match the overall emotional impact you were shooting for as well.

What emotion were you trying to evoke from viewers with your piece?

  3. Will says:

I noticed the fluidity and asymmetry in your animation for the vapor. The different scaling across each vape pen and different rates of emission give the vapor a striking chaotic, billowy appearance.

  4. Jasmine says:

The first thing that jumped out to me was the fact that the bars are red, and help evoke a feeling of danger in an otherwise muted palette. I am also a huge fan of the animation — you can clearly tell that it’s smoke coming out of the Juul, and emphasizes the detriment to one’s health.

  5. Dylan says:

I have an opinion about showing the represented grades: I believe having a small text next to each Juul labeling which grade corresponded to which device could help communicate the data more effectively.

  6. Neha says:

I thought it was really intriguing and eye catching that you actually put smoke clouds at the top to display vaping.

  7. Conor says:

Was there a purpose in making the smoke freeze in place above the juuls instead of disappearing?

  8. Oliver says:

Looking at this piece and its colors reminds me of images of lung damage which come along strong in this piece where vaping is a gateway drug to smoking.

  9. Lash says:

I have an opinion about the color selection, if you’d like to consider it. The colors for each of the Juuls reads almost that same, so it would be helpful if they were different colors. I think the muted tones work extremely well with your message though.

Hi, I have an opinion about the data. The data might be more effective if there is some texts saying what the x axis and y axis is about inside the piece.
