Data Art – Teen Vaping Rise in 2019

Vaping is becoming more and more of a trend among teenagers, even bleeding into middle schoolers’ lives. This early exposure to nicotine presents a very high risk of future nicotine addiction. While vaping is seen as the more “healthy” alternative, it is a gateway for children and teenagers into the world of nicotine and nicotine products.

The graphic shows three Juuls (popular vaping device) with bars inside of each. Each bar is a percentage of teenagers that said they tried vaping products. The tallest bars represent 12th graders, the second tallest bars represent 10th graders, and the third tallest bars represent 8th graders. The first Juul represents statistics from 2017, the second Juul represents statistics from 2018, and the third Juul represents statistics from 2019.

When the user clicks the mouthpiece of a Juul, the battery of the Juul moves downwards, revealing the data beneath it. The Juul also begins to release vapor. When the user clicks + holds down on a Juul mouthpiece, smoke will quickly billow out until the user stops holding down. Then, the smoke will continue to billow at a slower speed. When the user clicks another Juul’s mouthpiece, the previous Juul’s battery will be replaced and the Juul will no longer release vapor, ultimately resetting the object. If the user clicks anywhere else, the Juul will reset and all three Juuls will be as they were before.

Changes I made since the last sketch:

  • Added material to the Juuls’ mouthpieces so that they are shiny and aid in the realistic design.
  • Changed the boundaries for the picker to the mouthpieces of the Juuls instead of the batteries of the Juuls to make it really seem like you’re smoking the Juul when clicking on it.
  • Previously, the user could only produce smoke from the objects by clicking and holding down. I changed the smoke animation code so that clicking on the mouthpiece would send a “1” message to a toggle, which would then begin the smoke animation. Added that clicking anywhere else will send a “0” message to the toggle.
  • Clicking on a mouthpiece triggers a “position” message for the Juul battery, allowing it to move downwards. Clicking anywhere other than the mouthpiece triggers a “position” message that resets the Juul’s battery.
  • Changed the colors of the bars. The 2017 Juul has lighter colors and the 2019 Juul has much darker colors. Previously, the intensity varied, but only slightly. The purpose of this change was to give development to the piece and tell a story. It was also to symbolize the condition of human lungs when exposed to smoke regularly over a long period of time.
  • Added 3D text to label each Juul with the year it represents.
  • Previously, when the user stopped interacting with a Juul, the smoke spheres remained frozen above the Juul. Now, when the user clicks off of a mouthpiece, the spheres in the smoke animation are all scaled to zero.
