My piece highlights the disparity between Jeff Bezos’s net worth and the median yearly US income as of 2019. The inner circles, from smallest to largest, are the total wealth an average American will earn in their lifetime assuming 65 years of work, the net worth of the Queen of England, and the net GDP of Iceland. In the finalized version, I want to get mouse inputs figured out, add text labels, and figure out the bug where the third circle shows up as a grey screen- I could not for the life of me figure out why that was happening. Getting the scaling effect to work correctly took too long, so I was not able to implement everything I had hoped. My question is- is there anything I should do in addition to those planned features to drive my point home?
UPDATED 9/4:
This is my updated piece- I added text and fixed the bug I was running into previously.
If you were to add text as you mentioned, what type of information are you looking to display?
I would be adding basic labels and dollar values (i.e. “Median US yearly income- $31,000) in the center of each circle that disappears when you click to the next one.
To answer your question, no. Bug-fixing is important and labels would be needed to make it self-explanatory, but the overwhelming sense of scale is very powerful. Additional details/features are not needed to make the message clear.
Loved the thought you put into your colors! Permissioned Opinion: I remember you mentioning you wanted to communicate anger, so maybe each ball can shake or vibrate to communicate stress. Maybe after zooming out in steps to Jeff Bezo’s net worth, zoom in all the way back to the individual to end on a fiery red.
I notice the sense of scale of the wealth divide really depicting the disparity of money in modern times.
To answer your question — no, I think that once it has text labels indicating what each circle represents, it will be great! Anything else may distract from the very powerful sense of scale shown by the animation.
The point of your piece was really driven home in my opinion, I think the speed of the zooming animation just shows the starkness and difference between all the incomes/gdp’s
I have an opinion about how the camera moves in your piece. I think the zooms do such a good job at representing scale. After each zoom out, I tried to see if I could keep track of the starting red circle, and was amazed at how fast it vanished in comparison to the lighter circles that appeared. I admittedly stared at the end result for a while kind of in shock of the differences presented. I knew Jeff Bezos was rich, but never really thought about how rich – and this put it into perspective really well.
I notice the timing of the piece is relatively consistent. Even when moving between extremely large numbers it takes about the same amount of time to get between them (or it feels the same).
I think you’re focusing on just the right amount for the final polish, especially with the text labels. The text alone with the scaling circles will be extremely impactful.
I like the pieces zoom out and would love to see the piece entirely after the bug in the middle is fixed. I always thought the Windsor family was overpaid but this project shows that is a tiny amount compared to Jeff Bezos.
