My design for the Layers project is going to be a model of the largest volcano in the solar system: Olympus Mons! Though it is a shield volcano, meaning it is shaped quite flat like a shield, it is 2 and a half times taller than Mount Everest. It’s also located on Mars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I played around with a 3D STL file I found and I used Kirimoto to make a quick sliced version to see what it would look like.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

My inspiration comes from topographical maps of locations on Earth, like this map of Cape Cod. I really like appreciate the small details included, like the tiny islands, the roads, the names of the waters, and the compass. I probably will not incorporate these into my design, since it is a volcano on a desert planet, but I will make the terrain as detailed as I can realistically. I also like the contrast of the land versus the water, but since the Mars terrain is mainly just red dirt and rock without flowing liquid water, I think I’ll stick to a more basic color palette. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
