First Piece: Galaxy Donuts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concept of this piece was to create similar or identical layers and utilize transparency and lighting to create a sense of motion and depth. This was my first time working with edge lit acrylic so it was a great opportunity to experiment. The soldering on the bottom of this piece ended up being the most difficult part of assembly, 6 sticks * 3 wires per stick = 18 solder joints plus the microcontroller. The transparent the acrylic mixed with frosting the middle via raster engraving ended up working out far better than I imagined it would. I\u2019ll title this piece \u201cGalaxy Donuts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Second Piece: Tiki Lantern<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s my finished lantern! The original concept was to add an element of Tiki vibes to my apartment\u2019s home bar. The lantern flickers like a candle, but uses LEDs and a microcontroller. I think I\u2019ve done a pretty decent job of adding some warm, subtle lighting to the shelf. I designed the baseplate such that overextrusion from 3d printing accounted for the kerf of the laser cut panels. I used a hot glue gun for final assembly and printer paper to diffuse the light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Third Piece: Jangle<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here\u2019s my finished toy! I created Jangle, a gravity-defining take on Jenga. I achieved this effect by manipulating the infill of one side of each block to make the blocks unbalanced. Unfortunately, the surface finish of these pieces were not as smooth as I would have liked them to be due to over extrusion, especially on the 100% infill sections. Overall I\u2019m happy that the effect worked and I think it looks pretty cool. Also pictured are the slicing settings and the initial CAD, a future improvement could include printing the blocks out of sawdust-infused filament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
