For this project I wanted to put a twist on the sandbox I had as a kid. I used to have a turtle shaped sand box with a removable shell lid. When I would play in the sand box I would often leave toys like legos, barbies, transformers, etc. in it. Sometimes these toys would melt or deform if left in the sandbox during hot summer months.
I thought that it would be fun to incorporate the melting toys in the sandbox for the altered toys project. To do this I chose to represent the melted toys as a black sludge leaking from the sides of the turtle sandbox. To further push the point that the sludge was previously toys in their un-melted form I included mini sandbox tools, googly eyes, and some fun shaped shinny beads.
This project was made using the 3D printer and the parts were designed using Tinker CAD. The turtle was printed in white PLA and I painted it using acrylic paint. The googly eyes and other items were attached to the turtle using supper glue that dries white, which provided a fun bubble texture around most glued parts. The tools, glasses, and watering can are repurposed jewelry charms.

I think the addition of the other toys in the goop was a good idea. It really enthesis’s that its a destroyed/melted toy region and is a great addition. The turtle is also very cute.
