Rachel May Introduction/Portfolio

Hi! My name is Rachel, and I’m a sophomore Aerospace Engineering major. Born and raised in New England, I’ve lived in Upton, Mass almost my whole life.

My family includes a mom who is always sewing or painting and an engineer father, so I grew up seeing how both art and engineering intertwine. I really enjoy the design aspects of engineering, as well as 3D modeling. While I dabble occasionally in 2D art, I am much more passionate about 3D art and items.

I have a lot of experience with 3D modeling and some experience 3D printing, and I have taken multiple physical art classes as well as one digital art class where I got to play around with Illustrator. I also love crafts, like crocheting, knitting, painting, origami, sculpting, painting, jewelry making and more. I even made a blog during high school about various craft forms.

My main craft is crochet, as you’ll see from my portfolio. I love making tangible items especially as gifts for others. I like making stuffed animals, hats, scarves, toys, headbands, and more. It was quite a journey to finding crochet- I began with rainbow loom in elementary school, and as I got more advanced with it, I found loom knitting (knitting not with needles, but using pegs on a circular/rectangular board). I was a passionate loom knitter for many years, then tried my hand at knitting, and eventually found crocheting about 4 years ago and haven’t stopped since.

I gained experience in a makerspace in high school, where I made a lot of CAD designs and utilized the FDM 3D printers. I also took a deep dive into learning about resin 3D printers at one of my previous jobs. I am excited to expand my knowledge within Makerspaces and use the laser cutter!

I’m also not great at photography! Most of my portfolio photos had been taken quickly rather than for quality.

I apologize for the post being so long, but I wanted to show some different mediums. Here’s some of my previous work:

Crocheted multicolored octopi, a blueberry colored cow, a reversable happy-sad octopus, and a mushroom cross-body bag

A larger crocheted version of a “worm on a string” with string attached (string not shown in picture though)
Eve from WALL-E crocheted with pieces of felt glued on for the face
A hand knit chunky blanket in pink/gray underneath my green work in progress blanket.
Wooden Chi Omega letters I painted a black hole on.
A tree on a rock with an ombre sky behind it
A cutout of the letter R with various types of paper folds, flaps, spirals, and other shapes to create texture and depth.
An abstract wall piece made of recycled cardboard to create depth and texture.
A drawing of a draped sheet made with pastels (I sadly wasn’t able to finish it).
A pastel drawing of an apple.
A blown up view of a toy car I 3D modeled in Autodesk Inventor.
A digital motif project I completed with a partner, where I combined our designs into one. I created the yellow and blue line patterns.
