Lantern Design – Mikayla Raffin

After looking though all of the materials and helpful websites/software available for us to use to help us with this project, I was inspired specifically by the soma cube templates that look like different Tetris blocks I found on the template maker website. Seeing this specific template immediately inspired me to want to make a Tetris themed lamp, but not just cutting out the blocks and stacking them up. I want to additionally engrave a smaller version of the Tetris blocks in the iconic stacked frame within each individual full piece I cut out (see the concept sketch below for a bit of a better idea of this engraving idea). I definitely want to cut the pieces out of different colored acrylic so each piece can really stand out with the iconic Tetris colors, also so that the light can be picked up through all the pieces and the engravings can really pop.

I do have a couple questions, first I am super open to suggestions for how to light this piece because I am not super sure what kind of light source to use to capture all of the different colors and engravings on each piece when they’re all stacked. Also, when I stack all of the pieces should I try and keep the sides of each piece that touch when stacked open so the whole piece is hollow (make it one big box with the sides being a kind of mosaic of the different shapes) so the light can carry through the piece better, or should I keep them as separate blocks so they can be rearranged in different shapes?

What materials do you plan to use? As for letting light through the small tetris pieces could be fully cut out to let light through, and you could keep the large pieces connected.

You could put something opaque behind the engraved sections to block some light and make them stand out.
What is your plan for arranging the blocks?

How are you planning on attaching the acrylic together? I am also going to work with acrylic and am not sure the best way of doing it.

I think having different colored acrylic with a simple whitish light, like an LED or even a warmer tone would be cool as it makes each color glow.

Do you plan to have one of each color and piece type? Or maybe some duplicates?
