Layers Concept Sketch – Laura Pellowski

on

This is a rough sketch of what I am thinking of doing for the layers project. I want it to be dinosaur themed, and the different layers will show perspective. I think I will make it out of plywood, and then paint/stain the wood to achieve various colors.

I am inspired by TomskyStore on Etsy. I really like the oval shape and the way the outside border helps to create depth. I am realizing now that my concept sketch’s border isn’t the outermost layer, but I will make it that way in my actual project.

How were you planning on connecting the different pieces?

    1. Laura says:

Hi Haley, I think I will end up just gluing the pieces together.

  2. Deidra says:

How big do you plan to make this? (This is my favorite one :D)

    1. Laura says:

Hi Deidra, I am thinking of making it big enough to be a wall hanging, but not too big that it eats up a lot of material. Right now I am thinking of making it around 8 inches tall, but I will make my final decision when I start to print out the parts. (and thank you!!)

Do you plan on having colors on the physical piece?

    1. Laura says:

Hi Cullen, yes I am hoping to either add color through painting or staining. I am not sure yet if I want to stick to the colors in the concept sketch, or if I am going to change it up in my finished piece.

Do you plan on staying within the constraints of the frame?

    1. Laura says:

Hi Kat, I am still trying to make up my mind about this. On one hand, I think it’ll look cleaner with everything being inside the frame, but on the other hand I kind of like the tails poking out the sides. I am leaning towards the tails poking out, but I will make my final decision depending on how it looks when I’m assembling.

How many layers do you think the final piece will have?

    1. Laura says:

Hi Lauren, I am thinking 1 for the background, 1 for the blue dino and the sun, 1 for the cloud and mountain, 1 for the other mountain, 1 for the purple dino, 1 for the green dino, and 1 for the outside frame. So that will be about 7 layers.

Will constraining the piece to the bounds of the frame affect the detail and perspective of the dinos; will sticking to defined bounds alter the depth you created?

    1. Laura says:

Hi Samy, yes I am worried that cutting off the tails will make the dinos look less dino-like. I am hoping that leaving the tails sticking out means that the depth isn’t altered too much.

  7. Calvin says:

Will you include the transparency effects in this concept sketch?

    1. Laura says:

Hi Calvin, I will be making this out of plywood so the transparency will not show up in the finished piece. The transparency seen in the concept sketch is simply from be being a beginner in using Inkscape. I was not sure how to make everything opaque.

How will the smaller details like the Dino facial features be created? (rastoring, engraving, a cut, paint, ect?)
