Lauren Waddick – Final Projects

Layers Project:

For the layers project, I wanted to cutout a piece that would resemble the monster icons from the Monster Hunter game. I choose Rathalos as it is usually the mascot of the series. I bought wood from the makerspace and colored the piece using acrylic paints I had on hand. I tried to design the layers in a way that would add depth to certain parts of the creature like the wings. The image on the left shows a first draft of the idea that was too small so many of the pieces got lost. The image on the right is the final cut of this piece using a bigger scale. If I were to change one thing I probably wouldn’t have painted it and would have instead stained the wood to keep more of the wood texture.

Lantern Project:

For my lantern project, I wanted to base the theme around a game that I had played in the past called Okami. I thought the art style might look interesting when translating to a lantern. I tried to find the right balance between cut and structure to make sure the piece allowed light through but still retained aspects of it’s original design. I glued each side of the cube together after it was cut except the top so the light could be placed inside. I bought an electric light online to put inside to light up the piece.

Altered Toys Project:

For my altered toys project, I tried to design a toy concept that could’ve been seen as a Skylander when the games were going on. I sculpted the creature in zBrush, iterating on a sea monster design I had sketched out. I also tried adding the base that a water Skylander is usually seen on through comment suggestions. After posing it, I added supports and sent it to be 3D printed on a resin printer. Once the supports were removed and the resin had dried, I used primer to add a quick layer of acrylic paint to basecoat it. I am hoping to paint the base in the future.

I really love your altered toys project. Like all your other projects it is clear you really care for your art and put a lot of time and effort into getting every detail correct. I think you really nailed the altered toy project, as it really does look like a store bought Skylander even though it is an original character. I also really like the paint job on the altered toy, it is so good that it looks professionally done.

I am amazed by your altered toy! The detail in the model alone would be great, but to paint it as well bring it to another level. Your other designs are great too, as they put a unique spin on gaming icons without losing touch of what made them cool to begin with.
