Final Projects – Kaitlyn Nguyen

on

This is the post for all 3 of my final projects!

First is my lantern project! It is a vaguely mushroom shaped lamp that is a shadow projector, projecting silly creatures, notably a snail and moth, as well as stars to the wall! It started with a quick sketch in procreate and then the pieces 100% modeled and created in Solid-works. I then converted the Model to a drawing, which was then imported to Inkscape to create the vector file for laser cutting! This project was cut on 1/4” wood due to whatever was available, which ended up looking fine. For the light to work, I put a small led light on its side so it shines through the stencil onto the wall revealing the shadows. Overall, it’s a bit chunky and awkward as a lamp but I think it’s cute and the intended result was produced so I think that’s a win!

Next is my layers project! It is very simple, a layered base piece mimicking elevated land, with slits to fit various standing pieces depicting animals and bushes. The concept and original pieces were drawn in procreate, then traced in Inkscape. This resulted in cut pieces that didn’t fit properly so I just recreated all the pieces in solid-works to guarantee exact measurements. This revised version produced this final result, a mini simplistic diorama. I absolutely loved the simplistic look, and think this was one of my better projects. I ended up using glue to keep all the tabs in place but overall I think the tabs were a cool concept.

Last but not least is my altered toy project! I really had fun with this one and it was probably my favorite project. I created the model with solid-works and struggled with the connectors, as I needed them to be loose and have mobility without breaking. The first two attempts ended in snapped links and I’m possible to remove supports. After some tinkering I finally found a measurement and position for the links that worked, while a bit looser than I would want, they definitely work! I added some eyes with sticker paper and while not sanded, really tied it together and brought him to life!

These were my 3 projects for the class!

The use of tabs on the diorama was a great idea, it looks awesome!
