Lantern Design – Bee Lantern

on

My idea for the lantern will include a six-sided lantern, with the bee rotating in each frame. I am planning to do a honeycomb top and bottom to varying degrees, maybe using code to generate varying sized ones in a random order. I am still thinking about how to hang up the lantern, how to attach it to something, as well as if anyone has any interesting light suggestions. I originally wanted to use a lens to diffract light, this would provide a nice rainbow gradient as the light went up, but the dome lenses that could be used for this are expensive and would take a while to ship. The primary material will be wood, and maybe acrylic behind the bees. Feel free to offer any suggestions and or critiques to my design!

Do you plan on painting or staining the wood?

    1. James says:

I want to stain it a dark brown probably

For hanging, it might be cool to have a hook that goes off the top to either connect to the ceiling like a chandelier or a wall like a light post,.
What are you plans for each section? Are you going to engrave, raster, or cut through all the way the honeycombs.

    1. James says:

I want to cut through it with maybe tissue paper behind it

What are you planning as the light source? Will it just be internal (like a battery powered candle for instance) or will you have to figure out how to deal with a cord?

    1. James says:

I hope to have a battery powered light so I don’t need to worry about a cord

It might be cool to use yellow tissue paper or acrylic as a defusing tool to add to the bee vibes. (I am a huge bee fan and I really love this!)

Thank you, I was also thinking maybe a yellow filter

It could be interesting to have a light fixture that it hangs from like a chandelier.

How were you thinking you would put the box together (I don’t see fingers in your sketch)?

    1. James says:

there are large finger joints on each side, I am adding some to the top and bottom too

Having the lantern in the shape of a honeycomb is a very cute idea! How big do you think the lantern will end up being?

    1. James says:

I want to make each side 4×5 inches, so it will be about 5x5x5 inches in total
