Here is my layers design. I took inspiration from the topography maps specifically this one.

I want to make it look like a photograph on the wall rather than three dimensional like the one above. This is a topographical map of Plum Island (a small beach in Newburyport MA), I also will be adding a little shark off the coast 🙂
What tool did you use to separate the topography layers?
Procreate layers feature, I just drew them on different layers.
How do you plan to account for all the small details and making sure nothing gets lost during construction?
For this design I am going with subtraction and cutouts of the layers and then each layer will be placed on each other and the bottom layer will be placed on a plain rectangle of wood.
What is your plan with the shark? Are you going to make it a layer or engrave it?
I am going to cut it out and then put it on top of another layer.
Will you preserve the colors in your final piece? If so, how will you achieve that?
I will not, if anything I will paint the layers each different colors.
Are you planning on making the piece larger like the bench reference photo and covering it with resin?
No I am aiming for something smaller.
Are you planning on using different materials to contrast the land between the sea?
I plan to paint them differently.
Are you expecting the viewer to have some relationship with this piece or is it more of a personal thing?
It’s more of a personal thing.
For the shark, will the viewer be able to see the entire body / outline of it, or just a fin sticking out of the water?
Still unsure, what do you think?
What specific material(s) do you plan to use?
