For this work in progress I created the design in illustrator with 5 different sizes of infinity symbols. I intend to cut 2 of each size besides the smallest. I then will glue them together to make an hourglass shape sculpture. The image on the left is what it would look like from a top view and the image on the right is the layout I will be using to cut the Baltic birch wood with the laser cutter for minimal waste.
Artist Question: For the stack of the infinity symbols, I want the even layers to be a different color for added depth. Should I stain these layers or raster engrave them to color the layers?
I appreciate how each layer is different to make the piece more unique. I believe staining each layer would look pretty cool.
I noticed the purple layer really stands out, is this you intention? I feel you could do something really cool with this illusion and am intrigued to see your next steps.
I found it really compelling that each layer is slightly different than the last and that it creates what almost looks like a topographic map.
In my opinion I think staining the layers or painting them would add the color you are looking for.
My other idea/opinion I have is that it might be interesting to engrave a different set of words around the exposed edges of each infinity loop.
I noticed the symmetry within your piece. I think it’s very visually appealing.
I think that staining or painting will give a nice effect for depth.
How are you planning on displaying the final project (hanging, standing, etc)?
I found the hourglass shape of the piece to be very creative and visually appealing. I think staining or painting the layers would create more depth.
I find the symmetry of your piece very visually appealing. I personally think that staining or painting will look pretty nice. I think color will provide more contrast than rastoring. But, it might be possible to do both if you do a stain. I am not totally sure about that since my experience is nonexistent, but it could look cool with rastor and different stain colors.
I’m struck by the power in simplicity. I think this will look awesome at the end. To answer your question, I think staining would be nice
