Calvin’s Layers Design

Design Concept:

I plan to use edge lit, raster and vector engraved 0.25″ acrylic on this piece. In researching various layered edge lit pieces online, I noticed how the further back a layer, the blurrier and less detailed the design because light needs to travel through many layers. I plan to embrace and enunciate this property in my design instead of accepting it as a limitation by slowly blurring each subsequent piece of acrylic. Additionally, I plan on adding a progression of the design such that the shape of the front panel deteriorates layer by layer into the back panel.

Research:

I have been inspired for a long time by the makers at Adafruit. For this project, I was inspired by Adafruit’s use of edge lighting on some of their layered pieces. Below, I found an acrylic piece and a piece that used hot glue sticks, which I found very creative. I plan to use similar techniques and make a light show out of my piece.

Why did you decide on that order of colors?

    1. Calvin says:

That’s what I had in my pen pouch to demonstrate colors. I’m using RGB lights so the colors will change

How much do think you’ll spend on these materials?

Do you plan on using vector cuts, vector engraves, raster engraves, or a combination of them?

    1. Calvin says:

Vector and raster engraves for the designs, vector cuts to cut out the outline

How are you planning to attach your upright pieces to the base piece?

How big do you think the end piece is going to end up being?

    1. Calvin says:

      probably about a foot long

In order to get the varying colors, do you plan to use different colors of acrylic or different colored LEDs (or both?)

    1. Calvin says:

I’m using some neopixel leds which let me set each led to a different color
