Cullen Jacene: Lantern Design

For the lantern, I plan to recreate a box TV from the 80s out of wood, then make a screen out of acrylic that will let light through. This should give the impression that the TV is on. I wanted something that had a strong emphasis on light and dark, so I temporarily put this scene from the Karate Kid. However, I am open to ideas.

Edit: I added the jaws concept and wanted to see which people prefer and why?

Questions:
Are there any other scenes from movies that you all can think of? I want something that only needs a few acrylic colors since I don’t want to buy a lot of excess, and a scene that can be made minimalistic as so it is easily visible from anywhere in a room.
Does anyone have any acrylic left over from other projects? I would like to know how well different colors and thicknesses let light through. I want to ensure the orange will have a nice sunset look and the black lets little to no light through.

LOVE this idea. I’m a total 80s nerd so I’m all over this. I am definitely a fan of the karate kid silhouette, but to answer your question, you could also look into the Jaws movie cover, lots of potential with Starwars, certainly Jurrasic Park, Rocky, Dirty Dancing, Back to the Future, maybe even the Breakfast Club

Fantastic suggestions! Love those movies, but they might be hard to simplify while still having lots of bright colors. Jaws could work though.

What are your plans for the details on the front of the tv (not including the screen) ?

    1. Cullen says:

Everything on the right side is either going to be rastered, engraved., or raised. I think some stain can also give it a really nice 80s living room feel.

What were your plans on the tv details? I think a mix of engraving and cut out raised pieces would be cool!

    1. Cullen says:

I don’t know why, but I didn’t even consider raising some of the pieces. I think I’ll do that for the buttons and then raster the grill looking thing in the bottom right.

I love the jaws idea are you planning on incorporating color at all into this design? I am very interested to see this as you continue to create it!

    1. Cullen says:

The color will mostly come from the deign in the center of the screen as I plan to have the box just be engraved wood. I think I will end up doing the karate Kid because I think I like the sunset look. I think the color will look really nice with the wood when its off and the project a pretty color when it’s on.

I prefer the Jaws version simply because I like the colors better, but that is my own personal preference. I think this is a really cool idea!!

I appreciate the input, and while I think I would usually agree with you on blue being better than orange, I have started to fall in love with the sunset.
