I chose the Taj Mahal as the basis for my layers project. I was inspired by some of the vehicles/earth scene drawings by Cove Marquetry (Examples – Image 1). I started thinking about old cars and structures like the Disney Castle, which I deemed too complicated. One of my goals as a traveler is to make it to all 7 of the “modern” wonders of the world, so I took a look at their pictures side by side (Image 2). The Taj Mahal (one I have not yet been to) seemed to have, in my opinion, the best layers to work with. Plus, as a structural engineer, I spend a lot of time looking at buildings… Image 3 is my simplified sketch. I plan to use the plywood that I bought for the first print since I have extra material left over.

How many layers do you plan to make and how will you manage the intricate details?
Hey Cate, great question. It’ll definitely take some time to figure that out, but I will see what makes the most sense as I’m going. I envision maybe 4
How are the different pieces of the marquetery going to be visually separated?
Definitely going to use depth/layers as my biggest weapon to overcome this
How do you plan on orienting your design (upright, etc.)?
I think probably upright like you mentioned. Maybe hanging upright on something
Do you plan on using color?
I had not really thought about it until some people mentioned color in class yesterday. Maybe I will paint it!
Are you going to have your layers be inset (like in the inspiration pics), or will they be layered more 3-dimensionally?
Do you plan on using different textures or stains to give the appearance of different materials?
How do you plan to incorporate the layers into a 3D image, do you plan to have them stacked or have raised sections?
How do you plan on re-assembling the smaller pieces?
How do you intend on positioning the clouds?
