First Cut – Abbie Wang

on

For my first cut, I chose to cut out my Drawing #1 which is a Canon A-1 film camera. First attempt I use 100% speed, 10% power, 1 pass for engraving the lines and 100% speed, 20% power, 3 pass for the cutting. The engraving power of first attempt comes out to be to strong which it cuts all the way through in some area, so I stop the laser and tried the second attempt by decreasing the power to 5% for engraving, and it finally work and looks good.

I noticed how you took care in capturing the details in the smaller pieces like buttons and dials on the camera. Great job!

I noticed the vector engraved border really improves the perspective of the piece. The piece keeps a nice 3d look when translated to laser cuts. I appreciate the details, that really bring out a better sense of realism for the camera.

I noticed the way that the drawing is not straight on. I’m struck but the angle/position of the camera, which makes laser cutting precision more important. I appreciate the level of detail.

I noticed the vector engraved frame, adding the feel of a framed photo. I’m struck by the 3rd dimension of the camera, I feel like it it about to pop out of the wood, out of my screen, and attack me! Help! I appreciate the way you contained the camera to the wood, I feel safe.

There is depth on the camera. I am struck by all the details you were able to capture. I appreciate how clean all the lines are giving it a very mechanical look.

The letters on the camera are very sharp and easy to read. I am impressed by how detailed you were able to get your cuts to be. I appreciate the slight angle of the camera rather than just having the image be head on. I think it really gives it a 3d effect.

I really love the frame you have around the border, and I also notice and love the amount of detail you have. I think it is impressive how all of those small details came out, especially the “canon” and the little things (idk the proper terms) on the top left side of the camera.

I noticed the amount of detail put into the drawing. The 3D perspective really stands out.

I noticed the linear feel of the drawing. Since this piece had no raster engravings, the lines feel more mechanical and precise which fits well with the camera design.

I noticed how sharp and dark your lines are it makes it look very focused and bold.

The detail of your camera is awesome and I love the detail on the lense to give it some dimension.

I noticed the precise line work in this drawing and the almost isometric angle that the camera is sitting at. These design choices give the piece an almost schematic or engineering drawing like vibe. I apricate the small details that went into this piece and how that played into the overall vibe of the piece.

I’m mesmerized by the depth in the lens — those circles/ovals are super cool to look at and really make it seem like you could peer down the barrel of the camera!
