Haley Gilbert: Final Projects

For my lantern project I wanted to make a topographical map of Plum Island, a place I grew up. I began by tracing all of the different levels above and below seas level and then manipulated them to fit together in procreate before cutting them. Then I cut the layers out of wood and acrylic. For each of the layers depending on the depth of them I used a mixture of shades of blue glass stains to create different colors and shades in the waves, and the wood layer is representing the land. I chose not to stain the wood after using the stain on another piece I didn’t like the way it looked. For the two little sharks I used a black glass stain and glued them in.

Here is my finished lantern design! The inspiration I had from this was to make my dad a nightlight for his new shed. He has a bunch of shelves he is planning on putting up and would be perfect to put on the shelf. The base I bought for it came with a remote so he can easily turn it on and off and set timers. You can set the light to ten different colors as well as set it to change colors and set a timer for how long you want it to stay on. Overall, I am very happy with the way this came out and I cannot wait to give this to my dad!

For my altered toys design I wanted to remake a littlest pet shop, they were my favorite growing up and I always played with the german shepherd one. At the time I had a german shepard so I found it fitting to create a chihuahua as that was the dog I had for the rest of my childhood. I also wanted to make it practical so it would have more use than a trinket. So I made a hole through it with the dimensions of most pens so I could give it to my mom for her desk at home. After designing it I printed it out at the Maker Space and removed the scraps and there was some disfigurations. So I used a lighter to heat up the plastic so i could better shape it before painting. Then I painted it to have the same features as my old dog coco:)

Your layers look great, and the sharks were the perfect addition! The lantern is super clean too and looks like something I could buy in a store. I fell in love with the My Littlest Pet Shop dog the instant I saw it. I was able to recognize it instantly all because of the care that you put in nailing the proportions.
