Samy Rosenberg’s Altered Toys Project Work in Progress

For this project I am remaking a sandbox I had as a kid. I used to leave toys in there and let them melt in the summer heat. I thought it would be fun to show the melted “toys” (represented as black sludge) pouring out of the sand box. So far I have not been able to print but I have some CAD of the two parts. I was planning on painting them to match what a turtle looks like and giving the shell a pattern. Should I look for little googly eyes to put in the sludge puddles? Does acrylic paint work well on 3D printed parts. What would be a good orientation for theses parts that will require the least amount of sanding?

As for your question, I think the orientation you have in that bottom picture there would probably be best!

Thank you. I’m printing it now and I’m going to see how ti turns out.

I notice the eyes on the turtle. I think it’s super cute. Do you plan on printing the two pieces attached and if not how do you plan on attaching them? In my opinion, I think that this idea is super fun and I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

Thank you. I plan on printing the turtle with the eyes attached. I asked for everything to be printed in a light green. I plan on painting the eyes blue and using a stencil to paint brown shell patterns on the turtles shell. I also plan on painting the sludge black.

This design is super fun and nostalgic feeling. I am in favor of the googly eyes, I think they would add a lot of personality, especailly if they were different sizes and colors.

Thank you! I think I will add the googly eyes. I hadn’t thought of the different colors but I think it would be a great addition to this.

I like how you represent the “sludge” of melted toys. I think adding googly eyes and possibly other pieces of toys would also look cool in the sludge.

Thank you. I was thinking about maybe adding in some different sized glitter or confetti pieces possibly but I may just stick with the googly eyes.

What are you planning on putting inside? Real sand like a zen garden?

    1. Samy says:

I don’t know what I’m going to put inside but I like your idea of a mini zen garden. I was thinking I might also put candy (like individually wrapped hard candy), good smelling herbs, or things like rocks, necklaces, and rings inside it.

Your design is super creative and unique! I really like how the sludge represents the melted toys.
