Altered Toy Design – Sebastian Lanz

on

I was thinking of ideas and thought a novelty die would be cool. I call it the “Overly Complicated Die”. It is much more inconvenient than a standard D6 die and thats why I love the concept, its completely useless and funny. I enjoy all kinds of games most of all, so adding this to it will make for a fun time.

It will be a slanted board, so when you put a marble at the top it rolls down. There will be a pattern for the marble to go through, and I aim to make it interesting yet fair. This may be difficult unless I use simple pegs, but I intend to experiment some. At the bottom there will be six slots representing 1-6 to determine the outcome of your roll.

My min inspirations comes from those little plastic pinball toys, pachinko, and of course a six sided die. I would love to create a full 7 piece of dice, but that is not in the scope of this class.

A more geometric appraoch in a CAD program will probably suit this project best, so it will be a learning experience as I only have really worked in zbrush. If worst comes to worse I will switch to zbrush though.

A cool idea would be adding additional peg hole’s so that the board can be customizable if you wanted to make some numbers happen more or less.

Another cool idea is instead of all the pegs being cylindrical, maybe making them into different shapes like hearts or stars. I also like Cullen’s idea of making it customizable!

Having rolling a dice be a little game in itself is a very cool idea. Maybe having the tilted contraption constantly moving so it becomes a timing game would be fun if there’s time to do that.

This is really cool! Something you can add is some type of peg that can be manipulated into different directions depending on how the marble hits it but it might be too complicated.
