I am still deciding what exact design I am going to do for my lantern, but I have some ideas here. The first idea is making a 4 or 5 sided wooden lantern box and each side would be have a different design or letter cut out of the wood. I am thinking of these designs and making the box themed after my sorority, Chi Omega. I would then put a small fake candle inside to make it feel more warm and cozy.
My other idea is to buy a DIY acrylic light base kit off of Amazon and engrave a design into it, whether it be one of the pictures above or a different one. A different one I thought of is engraving a quote and then a flower design around it.
I am open to suggestions!
What type of wood do you plan on using if you do the first design?
Most likely plywood, but I am looking at some other options too.
I have an opinion about which idea to do. I personally like the first idea better. I think it leaves more space for creativity and customization.
Thank you! I appreciate your thoughts.
How are you planning to cut out the first two images while maintaining the detail?
The detailed crest image would definitely be the most challenging, but I might cut out the simple inner pieces and have a few bridges to hold certain pieces together. I will figure this out in Inkscape.
If you were to do the first option, would you plan on incorporating color?
I am looking at some multicolored lights, otherwise I might paint the piece and leave it as more of a desk lamp.
I have an opinion on the design ideas. I think the first idea allows for more creativity and you could also incorporate the quote idea into this design as well on one of the sides. I think the second Idea may be a little creatively limiting but could still be fun.
If you do the box what is you plan for cutting the details in the images out? They all apear to have a lot of intricate parts and colors.
I will cut out the simple parts and have bridges to keep inner parts.
Are you planning on using image trace or another tool to help you make these designs into an SVG format?
