Lauren Waddick – Lantern Design

My lantern design was inspired by the game artwork of Okami, which has a beautiful Japanese watercolor art style. I thought it’s design could create interesting positive and negative shapes with the light can create a scenic shadow when it is lit. I plan to edit the artwork below to be a bit more laser cutter friendly by making sure all the stranded pieces connect to each other and place on all sides of a 4-sided box lantern. The white parts are what I’m planning to try to have cut out fully and have light shine through except for the text at the top which will just have the text cut out.

Nice idea. What’s your method for assembly?

    1. Lauren says:

Will try to use Kerf to make the pieces slot together but if that fails I plan to use glue for the bottom and four sides with the top being removable for lighting.

Do you have any plans to adjust the white parts that touch the border of each piece?

    Also great game!

    1. Lauren says:

Yes, I am planning to edit it to have a black border.
Also great to see another fan of the game! 🙂

Do you know what you are going to use as a light source yet?

    1. Lauren says:

Most likely electric candle or lightbulb to make the silhouette clear.

What kind of material do you plan on using?
What is your plan for the size of the box?

    1. Lauren says:

Plywood is what I plan on using and most likely size will be 4 by 4.

How are you going to keep the pieces together when you assemble them?

    1. Lauren says:

I going to try to edit the black parts to make sure they are all connected in some way to the border to make sure it’s all one piece and get rid of stranded some pieces that aren’t attached to anything if that makes sense? It’ll be an iterative process to get right.

  6. Laura says:

How are you going to make sure that the black parts don’t fall out when you cut out the white parts?

    1. Lauren says:

I’m gonna try to connect all the black pieces together to the border but It’ll definitely take aa few try’s to get it to cut out correctly without it falling apart.

  7. James says:

Are you planning on numbering the pieces or something to keep track of where they are? How are you going to connect the pieces as well?

  8. Samy says:

How are you planning on keeping all the details when it moves to the laser cutter?

How are you planning on maintaining the structural integrity of the sides? It looks like a lot of material is being removed.
