I took the slices of my volcano that I got from Kirimoto and put them into Inkscape. I had to clean up a lot of extra lines, but I reached layers that I am pretty happy with. I am still deciding how big to make this project since there is a good amount of detail and some small pieces. I will be staining or painting the finished product a dark rusty red and leaving it oriented flat. I am open to ideas on how large to make it, like between 6 – 10 inches for the base. I am also not sure if I should leave the size comparison or if I should add something different, like listing the name and elevation or something else.

UPDATE: I have laser cut all of the pieces. I realized I scaled the model down a little too small in comparison to the thickness of the wood, but I am very happy with how it came out. I placed the pieces on top of each other, but haven’t glued them yet. In the picture you can see some of the engravings on the wood because they are not properly lined up, but they will be for the final product. I am going to sand and paint all of the pieces before gluing them.

I was unaware just how massive this volcano was, that’s crazy! In my opinion, I think it would be cool to include the NE size comparison on the base — if you wanted to, you could make it a double sided base, with the size comparison on one side, and a plain surface on the other. I’m imagining that you could make the space where the volcano would sit just a bit deeper, so that the volcano wouldn’t slide around, but you’d still be able to leave it detached from the base to be able to see both of the base’s sides.
I agree, that’s sounds a cool idea!
I am struck by the detail in each layer. How do you plan to position each layer? I personally kept the cut out pieces of my topographical map cuts and plan on using them as a guide when I glue them back together!
Each of the red sections is a vector cut and each black line is a vector engrave of the next piece. This way I can line up where the next piece will go on top of it.
I am struck by the image of the volcano compared to New England. I think it’s cool that you are providing that perspective in your piece.
I think that a good way to help you narrow down what size to use would be to make sure that the smallest piece you have will not fall through the laser cutter grate.
What material do you plan on using?
That’s a good point about the smallest piece not falling through. I plan on using 1/8 inch plywood from the Makerspace/
I’m struck by the detail. Do you think it’ll be difficult to assemble?
Hopefully with all the outlines engraved it shouldn’t be too bad- more like a fun puzzle!
