Layers Project WIP – Madison Little

I’ve started looking into buying the wood and clock kit for my clock. I’m still changing the design so the clock mechanism can go in the middle. I plan to make the clock approximately 10″ in diameter but I might make it smaller. I found two clock kits that would fit well with a 10″ clock.

I also separated the layers into how I am going to cut them out. My plan is to first make a sample clock out of cardboard and test it with the clock kit. Once I am sure about the size and shape I will make the final version with wood.

I am still looking into how I am going to get the bottom three layers blue. I like the look of staining over painting however the stains I found originally didn’t have great reviews. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations.

Update 1 – The clock kit arrived today and I was able to cut a prototype of the clock out of cardboard. I was able to get all four layers to work with the cardboard however the hour hand just barely clears the top layer so I’m not sure if it will work with the wood layers. I think I am going to add more tick marks around the edge to make it easier to read, but other than that I’m happy with how it looks.

I’m still looking into stain options, the one on the class list of resources looks good however it comes as a powder so I would have to get an additional liquid to mix them with. I’m going to keep looking into other options and hold off on buying anything until after I have all the pieces cut out of wood.

Update 2 – I laser cut all the layers with wood and stained the bottom 3 layers. I didn’t end up adding more tick marks to the clock face because I had an issue with Inkscape but I like the way it looks. All I have left to do is sand the edges, clean up the back piece, and glue everything together.

I am considering staining the top two layers a deeper brown because it feels a little unfinished but I’m not sure so I would appreciate opinions on that.

I unfortunately do not have any stain recommendations.

I am impressed by the idea to make a clock.

I have an opinion about your idea as a whole, I think that it will look really cool and I like that it is something functional.

I have never really used stain either. I appreciate the details of the roads on the land. I am wondering if you will add the road name or leave it off.

I am not sure about a specific stain but finding a wood stain sample kit might be beneficial to test out the stain over the paint idea. I think that idea overall is very creative and unique.

I don’t have experience with stain, so I am not sure if this idea will actually work. But maybe you could use paint but dilute it to make it appear more transparent and look like stain.

I appreciate your clock idea, and I am excited to see how it turns out in the end. I am wondering how you are planning on hanging it up?

I’m impressed with the uniqueness. I like that you figured out a way to combine your idea with the clock and the design. I do not have experience with staining, but I do think that painting it would look really nice alone too.

I am very impressed with the idea to create a functional clock. This will make a really useful and decorative piece. The only stain I’ve used is Minwax wood finish, and it worked alright. It created the desired effect, but was a little streaky.
